Cartersville Country Club Successfully Defends at Georgia Team Championship

STATHAM, Ga. –  Cartersville Country Club held off a final-round charge from TPC Sugarloaf of Duluth, finishing one stroke ahead to win the Georgia Team Championship for the second straight year.  The 20th annual competition took place at The Georgia Club, October 27-28.

Cartersville owned a six-stroke lead over TPC Sugarloaf and Indian Hills Country Club of Marietta after the four-ball stroke play format in the opening round.  In Sunday’s final round, in which the best three of four 18-hole scores combined as the team score, TPC Sugarloaf posted a 2-under-par 214, courtesy of a 3-under 69 from Bob Stonikas of Duluth, a 72 from Doc Holliday, and a 73 from Reece Whitley of Smyrna. Cartersville finished at 3-over 219 for the day, counting a 71 from Cres Dodd of Calhoun and a pair of 74s from Chase Jones and Jayce Stepp, both of Cartersville.  The fourth member of Cartersville’s team, Chris Hall of Kennesaw, carded a 78.  Combined with day one totals, Cartersville finished at 344 to hold on to its title, while TPC Sugarloaf finished at 345.

St. Ives Country Club of Johns Creek, which has finished as runner-up in each of the last two Championships, came in a tie for third place this year along with Berkeley Hills Country Club of Duluth at 347. Valdosta Country Club finished fifth at 348, while Indian Hills dropped to sixth at 350.

The Georgia Club's Red and Black nines played to 6,896 yards and a par 72. 

The Georgia Team Championship is conducted by the Georgia State Golf Association.  Entries were open to male amateur golfers who are Georgia residents and members of a GSGA Member Club.  A club official must have authorized the team’s entry, and entries were accepted on a first-come, first-served basis up to a full field of 30 teams.
