Clark, Marsh Win 21st Annual Georgia Senior Four-Ball Championship
Duo collects fourth overall title; most in championship history

 

COLUMBUS, Ga. – Larry Clark of Kingston and Don Marsh of Johns Creek won the 21st annual Georgia Senior Four-Ball Championship, their fourth overall title, at 6-under-par 207 (67-69-71). Clark and Marsh won by three strokes over runner-ups Mel Mendenhall of Marietta and Larry Vaughan of Greensboro (3-under-par 210, 68-72-70). This year the event took place at Green Island Country Club and the Country Club of Columbus, November 14-16.

 

With the win, Clark and Marsh now hold the most titles by one team in the 21-year history of the Georgia Senior Four-Ball Championship with four (2005, 2008, 2010, 2012). The dynamic twosome has also now finished third or better for the eighth-straight championship, dating back to their first victory in 2005.

Bill Evans and Jim Lester (72-70-69) both of Columbus, tied for third with 2011 champions Mark Baxter and Bill Blalock (66-73-72), both of Atlanta, at 2-under-par 211. Four teams tied for fifth at 1-under-par 212, including John Landis and Jack Kearney (68-73-71), both of Peachtree City; Fred Atterberry of Dahlonega and Gerry Grogan of Gainesville (69-72-71); Lee Dennis of Comer and Rocky Costa of Alpharetta (70-69-73); and Ron Hunter of Jasper and Eddie Register of Sugar Hill (68-71-73). Rounding out the top-10 were four teams who tied for ninth at 1-over-par 214, including Tommy Beman of Alpharetta and Bruce Wood of Suwanee (75-70-69); Bill Leonard of Dallas and Alan Thielemann of Woodstock (70-75-69); Karl Simon of Lawrenceville and Taylor Adams of St. Simons Island (72-72-70); and Steve Allen Collins of Claxton and Wally Adams of Vidalia (69-70-75).

 

In the first flight, Murray Calhoun III and Speedy Gilstrap (74-76-70), both of Columbus, and Darryl Harris of Woodstock and Charles Speakman of Columbus (73-72-75) shared the top spot at 7-over-par 220. Arch Arnold and Fred Miller, both of Columbus, won the second flight at even-par 213 (72-74-67). In the third flight, Charles Boyle of Atlanta and John Calvert of Jonesboro took flight honors at 17-over-par 230 (83-73-74). Robert Reichl of Evans and Frank Ewald of Latrobe captured the title in the fourth flight at 24-over-par 237 (79-76-82).

Three players recorded aces this week, two at Green Island Country Club and one at the Country Club of Columbus: In Wednesday's opening round at Green Island Country Club, Mike Keeble of Newnan holed out on the par-3, 157-yard second hole, while Steve Allen Collins of Claxton earned his own hole-in-one on the same hole in round two with a 7-iron.  During the final round at the Country Club of Columbus, Charles Speakman of Columbus used an 8-iron from 131 yards out on the par-3 16th hole.  

The Championship flight played all three rounds at Green Island Country Club in Columbus – a par 71, 6,160-yard track. The first through fourth flights played each round at the Country Club of Columbus – a par 71, 6,007-yard layout.

The completion of this week's Georgia Senior Four-Ball Championship marks the end of the 2012 GSGA tournament season.
