Notes:
After the 36-hole qualifier at the University of Georgia Golf Course, four players have earned automatic spots into the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship. Seventeen-year-old Joshua Lee of Orange Park, Fla., (72-67) and 15-year-old Zecheng Dou of the Peoples Republic of China (69-70) share medalist honors at 3-under-par 139. Tae Wan Lee of Korea finished at 2-under-par 140 (71-69) for the third automatic qualifying spot, and Andy Shim of Duluth, Ga., is the fourth automatic qualifier at 1-under-par 141 (72-69). The 17-year-old Shim is fresh off winning the Georgia Junior Championship five days ago at Doublegate Country Club in Albany, Ga.
The 2011 Georgia Junior champion, Greyson Sigg of Augusta, Ga., is the first alternate after turning in an even-par 142 (71-71). A playoff was needed to determine the second alternate, as a couple of Georgians, Andrew Eunice of Moultrie (73-70) and Preston Heyward of Duluth (72-71), tied at 1-over-par 143. After returning to No.1 at the University of Georgia Golf Course, Heyward clinched the second alternate position.
The field was cut to the low 27 players and ties after the first round, including all players within eight strokes of the 18-hole leader. The cutline was 6-over-par 77 and 38 players advanced to round two.
The University of Georgia Golf Course, one of 63 qualifying sites nationwide, played to 7,025 yards and a par of 71.
The 65th annual U.S. Junior Amateur Championship will be held at The Golf Club of New England in Stratham, N.H., July 16-21. Entries were open to amateur golfers who will not have reached their 18th birthday on or before July 17, 2012, and who have a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 6.4. The U.S. Junior Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association.
