2000 Atlanta Amateur Match Play Championship

Costa Wins the 79th Atlanta Amateur Championship

Rocky Costa of Alpharetta defeats Nicholas Cowper of Kennesaw 3 and 2, at the 78th Annual Atlanta Amateur held at Crooked Creek Golf Club in Alpharetta November 10-13. Costa is now a 2-time winner of this event, he also won in 1997.

Costa won against Paul Sorel of Alpharetta, 2 up in their semifinal match. Costa played very solid all day long, during the final match he did not have a bogey on his card until the par 3 16th, but that was still good enough to close out the match against Cowper 3 and 2.

Cowper thought it would be his day when at 2nd hole a 128 yard Par 3 he made an ace in his semifinal match, against Matt Lawson of Peachtree City, which he won 1 up. Cowper is 18 and a Senior at Harrison High School in Cobb County. Cowper wants to play college golf and he says that The College of Charleston is one of his favorites so far. Cowper does not play in many tournaments but when he does, he does very well. In 1999 he qualified for the US JR. Amateur and shot 77-71 to miss the cut by 1 shot.
