Webb Captures Georgia Amateur Championship in Eventful Playoff

ATLANTA, GA -- Michael Webb of Elberton captured the 80th Annual Georgia Amateur Championship Sunday at Cherokee Town and Country Club in Atlanta in an eventful one-hole, sudden-death playoff with Randy Donahoo of Woodstock. Both players finished the regulation 72 holes at 10-under-par 278.

After Donahoo's second shot on the 487-yard par five 18th went far left and bounced into the club's cart facility, Webb calmly hit his four iron to about 12 feet.

Donahoo eventually finished with a double bogey, virtually assuring Webb the title. Webb, nonetheless, displayed his championship character and drained the putt for eagle.

Webb, a senior at Augusta State University, quickly lost the one-stroke lead he held at the beginning of the final round with a double bogey on the first hole after driving out of bounds. A fierce battle ensued from that point, with as many as five different players holding shares of the lead during the round. At one point Webb had worked his score to 11 under but dropped back again with a double bogey on 13. Donahoo, playing in the group ahead of Webb, got to nine under with a birdie on the par five 15th.

Donahoo, who turns 36 next week, posted his 10-under score first, two-putting for his birdie at the 18th for a closing two-under 70 on the day. Webb was still at nine under when he scrambled for par on 17 and got word via hand signal from his dad that 10 under was in the clubhouse. Webb steadied himself and likewise two-putted for birdie, thus setting up the playoff showdown.

Sharing third place at eight-under 280 were 1980 Champion Griff Moody of Cumming, with a final round 71, and Harold Wyatt of Atlanta with a closing 73. Dave Womack of McDonough was fifth at 281; Michael Standard of McDonough was sixth at 282; Jay Childs of Kennesaw, Bill Hodges of Atlanta and Christian Newton of Lyons shared seventh at 283; and second round leader David Robinson of Sandersville was 10th at 284.
