Haigwood Goes Wire-to-Wire, Wins Georgia Girls' Championship

ATLANTA --– Jessica Haigwood of Roswell carded even-par 70 in the final round for a 54-hole total of 1-over 211 and a six-stroke victory over Emily Kurey of Alpharetta and Rinko Mitsunaga of Roswell to win the 31st annual Georgia Girls' Championship. Haigwood, who shot 70-71-70, led wire-to-wire in the Championship, which took place at Capital City Club-Brookhaven Course, June 21-23.


The 15-year-old Haigwood began the day with a four-shot lead over both Kurey, 15, and 13-year-old Mitsunaga. She gave up a couple of strokes with two bogeys over the front nine, but made up for it with a pair of birdies after the turn (holes 12 and 16) for another steady round. Kurey who shot a tournament-low 68 in the second round, and Mitsunaga both carded 72 in the final round to remain tied for runner-up honors. It was the second-straight top-three finish for Mitsunaga, who placed third in last year's Championship.


Thirteen-year-old Rachel Dai of Suwanee placed fourth overall for the second straight year, posting a 224. Championship B fight competitor Lauren Court of Lawrenceville finished fifth at 225. Five players tied for sixth to round out the overall top 10 at 229, including 15-year-old Katy Harris of St. Simons Island, Championship B competitor Paula Hong of Duluth, 13-year-old Michaela Owen of Alpharetta, 14-year-old Isabella Skinner of Cumming and Championship C flight winner Bailey Tardy of Norcross.


Kayley Marschke of Suwanee and Sydney Needham of Villa Rica tied for first place in the Championship D flight at 248.


A total of 48 players (those with a handicap index of 14.4 or lower) competed in the Championship Division for the overall title and were divided into four flights – A through D. The Championship flights played 54 holes (18 each day) at 5,824 yards and a par 70.


Entries were open to female amateur golfers between the ages of nine and 17 who are GSGA members or dependents of GSGA members.


The top four overall finishers are invited to represent Georgia in the fifth annual Georgia-South Carolina Girls' Junior Challenge Match, a match-play team competition between the two states. This year's competition takes place August 7-8 at Harbor Club in Greensboro.
