Stackhouse Wins Georgia Girls' Championship by Four Strokes
ATLANTA – Thirteen-year-old Mariah Stackhouse of Riverdale shot a final-round, 3-over-par 75 and cruised to the title in the 28th annual Georgia Girls' Championship, contested at Dunwoody Country Club in Atlanta, June 18-20. Stackhouse finished at 6-over 222 for the Championship, four strokes ahead of Americus' Kathryn Fowler.
Yugene Lee of Athens finished third at 12-over 228 with a final-round 76, while Lawrenceville's Lindsay Adams was fourth at 230 after carding her second-straight 74. Blaire Minter of Marietta placed fifth at 235, while Emilie Burger of Hoschton and Lacey Fears of Bonaire tied for sixth at 238. Dawsonville's Kasay Holbrook came out of the Championship B flight to finish eighth overall at 239. Taylor Ramsey of Augusta was ninth at 240 and Metter's Tess Fordham was one stroke back in 10th with a final-round 76. Stackhouse began the day with a five-stroke lead over Lee and a seven-stroke advantage on Fowler, her two playing partners in the final grouping. She ran into a stretch of trouble early, with three-straight bogeys on holes 3, 4 and 5. She also bogeyed the 376-yard seventh, but came back with a birdie on the 473-yard ninth to make the turn at 3-over for the round, +6 for the tournament. With three bogeys and one birdie of her own on the front nine, Lee had gained a stroke on Stackhouse by the turn. Fowler, who played the front at 1-over, trailed by five.
Stackhouse's three-putt for bogey on number 10 moved Lee to just three strokes back and Fowler to four, but that was as close as the margin would get.
Stackhouse's birdie on 14 got her back to 6-over for the tournament with four holes to play. Neither of her playing partners could challenge from that point, although Fowler birdied 16 to move into second place ahead of Lee, who double-bogeyed the hole.
Fowler, who was the first-round leader with a 75, finished with the low score of the final round, an even-par 72. Stackhouse's 2-under 70 in the second round was the only sub-par score of the Championship.
Dunwoody Country Club played to 5,988 yards and a par-72 for the Championship flights.
Holbrook, who also carded a 72 in the second round, won the Championship B flight by five strokes over Carnesville's Carrie Metz (244). Roswell's Rinko Mitsunaga was third at 245, while Amira Alexander of Alpharetta finished fourth at 248.
Entries were open to female amateur golfers between the ages of nine and 17 who are Georgia residents and GSGA members or dependents of GSGA members.
Stackhouse, Fowler, Lee and Adams have all qualified to represent Georgia in the second annual Georgia-South Carolina Girls' Junior Challenge Match, a match-play team competition between the two states. This year's competition takes place August 4-5 at Berkeley Hall Plantation in Bluffton, S.C. Founded in 1916, the Georgia State Golf Association (GSGA) received its official charter on June 24, 1924. Since that date, the GSGA has grown to one of the largest state amateur golf associations in the country, with over 365 member clubs and 85,000 individual members. With a mission to promote and preserve amateur golf in the state of Georgia, GSGA offers a computerized handicapping service, course rating and measuring, and annually conducts a full schedule of statewide competitions for men and women of all age groups. Other services include a summer-long junior sectional program, award-winning Golf Georgia magazine, membership recognition and rewards programs and a charitable foundation administering two college scholarship programs.
