Jennifer Adyorough Repeats as Georgia Girls' Champion
MARIETTA, GA. - Jennifer Adyorough of Atlanta successfully defended her title as she fired a final-round 76 for a 224 total and a wire-to-wire victory at the 26th Annual Georgia Girls' Championship, which was played at Capital City Club-Brookhaven in Atlanta, June 20-22. Macon's Christina Wentworth, who played out of and won the Championship B flight, finished as runner-up after shooting a final-round 84 on the par-72 layout to give her a three-day total of 237. Vicki Yi of Bogart, who began the day in a tie for eighth place, carded a 77 in the final round to finish in third.
Adyorough shot a 36 on the front nine but struggled a little on the back due to a double-bogey on number 17. She regained her focus though to finish with a par at 18. Adyorough also continued her strong play on the par-fives finishing the day even on those five holes. For the tournament, Adyorough played the par-fives at two-under (four birdies, nine pars and just two bogeys).
"The course was in really great shape and fun to play," Adyorough said of the 5,735-yard layout. "On the par-fives, I tried to play my ball so that I would have a full shot into the greens. It just always seemed that I had the right club in my hands when I was hitting my approach."
Jennifer Cassidy of Dalton and Kacie Hawver of Americus finished in a tie for fourth position with a three-day total of 241. Calhoun's Jayne Curtis finished with a 242 which was good for sixth place overall. Emilie Burger, top finisher in the Championship C flight, tallied a final-round 84 for a tournament total of 243 and seventh place. In a tie for eighth was Lacey Agnew of Jonesboro and Carrie Metz of Buford at 245. Finishing in a tie for tenth place at 247 was Lauren Darnell of Gainesville and Leigh Crosby of Athens.
Adyorough, a 16-year-old rising junior at Woodward Academy, has emerged as a top junior female player in the state. She is the sixth player in Georgia Girls' Championship history to win consecutive titles, the last to do so being Jean Reynolds of Newnan who won three consecutive championships in 2000, 2001 and 2002. Earlier this year, Adyorough finished in a tie for seventh place at the Greater Atlanta Women's Amateur Championship. She will also try to qualify for the U.S. Girls' Junior Amateur Championship later this month at Braelinn Golf Club in Peachtree City.
The Girls' Championship also included 36-hole and 18-hole competitions for those entrants with handicaps higher than 14.4. Katherine Walsh of Kennesaw fired a second-round 84 to capture the 15-17 Age Division by seven strokes. Walsh finished with a tournament total of 181. Duluth's Jenna McConnico won the 9-11 Age Division, which played two nine-hole rounds during the first two days of competition, with steady nine-hole rounds of 41 (82 overall) on the 5,208-yard layout. The age divisions completed their second round of play on Tuesday.
The Georgia Girls' Championship was open to female amateur golfers between the ages of 9-17, who are Georgia residents and a member or dependents of GSGA members. Past champions include three-time winner Jean Reynolds of Newnan and 2002 Curtis Cup team members, Angela Jerman of Columbus and Courtney Swaim of Suwanee.
GSGA conducts 18 statewide competitions for men and women of all age groups, three interstate matches, and 17 USGA qualifying events each year. Other services include computerized handicapping, course rating and measuring, a summer-long junior sectional competitions program, Golf Georgia magazine and two college scholarship programs.
