Jennifer Adyorough Holds On to Win the Girls' Championship
MARIETTA, GA. - Jennifer Adyorough of Atlanta carded an 80 for a 233 total and a two-stroke victory at the 25th Annual Georgia Girls' Championship, which was played at Indian Hills Country Club, June 21-23. Marietta's Ashley Barbee, who began the day in a tie for fourth place, came up short after firing a tournament-low final-round 74 on the par-72 layout to give her a three-day total of 235. Lauren Darnell of Gainesville and Patricia Kim of Midland tied for third at 237.
Adyorough struggled on the front nine due to errant tee shots. She started the day with two bogeys and recorded a double on the par-4 ninth hole to give her a 42 on the front side. After yanking a tee shot off of the No. 17 tee into the woods, Adyorough learned that Barbee had closed to within two strokes of her lead. Adyorough immediately responded by hitting a solid third shot on 17, capitalized by a 25-foot par putt. She closed the door on Barbee and the field with a par on the 439-yard, par-5 18th hole.
"The course was very difficult," Adyorough said of the 5,810-yard layout. "You really have to hit a lot of perfect shots in order to score low. I was a little worried after making the turn but played well enough on the back nine to win."
Defending champion Vicki Yi of Bogart improved upon her second-round 85 with a closing 78, placing her fifth at 239. In sixth place overall, shooting 79-81-80, was Erica Still of Waycross. St. Simons Island's Rebecca Durham (76) finished at 241, good for seventh. Stacey Kim of Midland, Patricia Kim's 13-year old sister, and Jayne Curtis of Calhoun shot 77 and 80, respectively, and finished tied for eighthplace at 243. Emily Cross of Acworth finished in the 10th spot with a final-round 79 at 245.
Adyorough, a 15-year-old rising sophomore at Woodward Academy, has emerged as a top junior female player in the state, having already won at the AJGA Nike Golf Junior at Jacksonville in Jacksonville, N.C., and placing second at this year's Westfield PGA Junior Golf Section. She captured her first title last year at the Atlanta Junior Golf Grand Championship, carding a three-round total of 222. Adyorough's Woodward Academy also won this year's Class AAAA Girls' High School State Championship.
The Girls' Championship also included a 36-hole competitionforthose entrantswith handicaps higher than 14.4. Blaire Minter of Marietta, a member of Indian Hills Country Club, took the 12-14 age division with a two-day total of 185, winning by an eight-stroke margin on the 5,370-yard track.
