Reynolds Captures Third Straight Georgia Girls' Championship


MARIETTA, GA - Jean Reynolds of Newnan (left) finished with a three-under 69 and a four-stroke victory over Margaret Shirley of Roswell to capture her third straight Georgia Girls' Championship. Shirley, who was tied with Reynolds after the first round, finished at 219 after a final-round 71 at Canterbury Golf Club in Marietta.


Jennifer Cassidy of Dalton (right) moved up to third after closingwith a 73 for a 227 total, while Christina Wentworth of Macon dropped one to fourth position at 230 after a final-round 80. Finishing tied for fifth at 231 were Sarah Donald of Athens and Ashley Medders of Alma.


Reynolds, 17, who is a rising senior at Newnan High School, closed out her career in the Girls Championship with scores of 74-72-69-217. "It was really exciting to win this championship," said Reynolds. "This is my last year playing and I enjoyed it."


Margaret Shirley (right) was attempting to avenge her recent runner-up finish at the state AAAAA high school championships, where she finished six strokes behind Reynolds with a 73.


Rounding out the top ten are Whitney Frykman of Acworth (236), Katherine Hooks of Augusta (236) Gina Gibson of Statesboro (239) and Katy Rogers of Watkinsville (240).


The Girls' Championship also included a 36-hole competition for those entrants with handicaps higher than 14.4. Brittany Henley of Columbus finished at 175 to win the Age 15-17 division over Mattie Leahy of Roswell. Jordan Alexander of Alpharetta, who entered the day three strokes behind, shot a final-round 81 to win the 12-14 division by two strokes over Emily Cross of Acworth, who finished at 166. Marietta's Maggie Siddons was the lone competitor in the 9-11 division.


This championship was open to female amateur golfers between the ages of 9-17, who are Georgia residents and a member or dependents of GSGA members.

 

The par-72 layout is played to approximately 5,748 yards for the championship flight and 5,255 yards for the age divisions. Past champions include recently selected Curtis Cup team members, Angela Jerman of Columbus and Courtney Swaim of Suwanee.


GSGA conducts 18 statewide competitions for men and women of all age groups, three interstate matches, one Atlanta-area competition and 17 USGA qualifying events each year. Other services include computerized handicapping, course rating and measuring, a summer-long junior sectional competitions program, Golf Georgia magazine and two college scholarship programs.
