Wolfes Runs Away with Georgia Junior Championship Title
St. Simons Island-native sets championship's 54-hole scoring record
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Scott Wolfes of St. Simons Island fired a final-round 67 to run away from the field and capture the title at the 44th annual Georgia Junior Championship, which took place at Sea Island Golf Club – Retreat Course, June 22-24. Wolfes, who posted rounds of 68 and 66 during the first two days of competition, set a new 54-hole scoring record of 201 at the Georgia Junior. Ollie Schniederjans of Powder Springs finished four shots behind in second place.
"It was great to win this [championship] at home," Wolfes explained. "I have some knowledge of the course and I had a bunch of friends and family members cheering me on. "
Wolfes, a rising junior at Glynn Academy in Brunswick, began the final round of play with a four-stroke lead. Schniederjans quickly closed to within two shots, carding birdie on each of his first three holes, but that was as close as he would get. Wolfes began his charge connecting on birdie putts at the 321-yard sixth and the par-5 eighth. Schniederjans, who had now watched the margin expand during each of the last three holes, was able to climb back to within four with a birdie on number nine.
After each landed their tee shots in the tenth fairway, Schneiderjans pulled his second shot to the edge of the woods and was forced to settle for bogey. On the same hole, Wolfes connected on a 2-foot birdie putt to extend his lead to six shots. Wolfes never looked back as he continued to extend upon his lead with birdies on holes 11, 12 and 14. A bogey on the par-4 15th cut his lead, but his pace was too strong by that point to jeopardize his title run. Schniederjans made a late charge sinking a 18-foot eagle putt on 17 but Wolfes' pace was too much.
"I just got hot for a few minutes," Wolfes said of his record-setting performance. "I just hit a lot of fairways which you have to do on this course. If you stay out of trouble, you can score."
Michael Garrettson of Acworth, a teammate of Schniederjans at Harrison High School in Kennesaw, finished third overall at 210 (-6). McDonough's Will Evans climbed into fourth place after a final-round 68. Lawrenceville's Jack Walsh placed fifth with a championship-total of 213. Three players – Anders Albertson of Woodstock, Gus Wagoner of Duluth and Griffin's Henry Mabbett – tied for sixth position at two-under 214. Zach Hartman of St. Simons Island and Hahira's Ty Howze took home a share of ninth position at 215.
The top eight finishers in the Georgia Junior Championship go on to represent the Peach State in the 34th annual Georgia-South Carolina Junior Challenge Match, which takes place at The Reserve at Lake Keowee in Sunset, S.C., July 17-18.
The field of 144 was cut to the low 70 and ties after 36 holes, with the cut line falling at 10-over 154 and 70 players advancing to Wednesday's final round. The par-72 layout of Sea Island Club's Retreat Course played to 6,835 yards.
Entries were open to male amateur golfers between the ages of 14-17 as of June 22, who are Georgia residents and GSGA members or dependants of GSGA members.
