Doug Hanzel Captures Georgia Mid-Amateur Championship By Two Strokes

BOGART, Ga. - Doug Hanzel of Savannah carded a five-under 211 and shot under par in all three rounds to capture the Georgia Mid-Amateur Championship, which took place at Jennings Mill Country Club, May 21-23. Hanzel won by two strokes over Jeff Knox of Augusta, with whom he shared the 36-hole lead. Scott Davenport of Marietta moved up four spots in the standings to finish third at two-under 214.

Michael Standard of McDonough and Fred Rescigno, Jr. of Lawrenceville shared fourth place at even-par 216. David Noll, Jr. of Dalton and Danny Nelson of Savannah were one stroke back in sixth, while Jeff Belk of Marietta, 2000 Champion Greg Kennedy of Cumming and Brian Davidson of Baldwin all tied for eighth at 218.

Hanzel and Knox both began the day at four-under, but Knox bogeyed No. 2 to give Hanzel sole possession of the lead for good. Knox cut his deficit to one stroke twice during the round, but a bogey on 14 followed by a Hanzel birdie on 16 gave the eventual winner a three-stroke cushion with two holes remaining. Hanzel then three-putted 18 to produce the final two-stroke margin of victory. He hit 16 greens-in-regulation and his only two bogeys of the round came off three-putts.

A physician playing in just his second GSGA event, Hanzel qualified for the Mid-Amateur by sharing medalist honors at the Wilmington Island Club. He has competed in eight U.S. Amateur Championships, most recently in 2001, and advanced to match play in 1996. For Knox, it was his third runner-up finish in the last four Mid-Amateurs and fifth runner-up finish in the past six years at GSGA major events.

Davenport, who began the day in seventh place, bogeyed his third hole, but made a charge with four birdies on 4, 6, 8 and 10. On the 205-yard fourth, he hit a three-iron within three feet of the hole, then made a 40-foot putt on No. 6. A bogey on 18 dropped him out of a tie for second with Knox, but his two-under 70 was still the low round of the day on the 6,924-yard layout.

This was the 23rd playing of the GSGA's Georgia Mid-Amateur Championship, which features the state's top amateurs age 25 and older. The field of 156 was reduced to the low 70 and ties after 36 holes. The cut fell at 156 with 71 players completing all three rounds. This was the second year qualifying was held to determine the Mid-Amateur field, which was previously determined by handicap index. Nearly 350 players competed for 107 available spots at five 18-hole qualifiers across the state.

The GSGA conducts 18 statewide competitions for men and women of all age groups, three interstate matches and 17 USGA qualifying events each year. Other services include computerized handicapping, course rating and measuring, a summer-long junior sectional competitions program, Golf Georgia magazine and two college scholarship programs.
