Rick Cloninger Wins Fourth GSGA Title at the Georgia Mid-Amateur Championship

Augusta, GA - Cloninger started out the day with 3 birdies in the first 5 holes, on his way to final round 1-under par 71 to win his 4th GSGA title over Jeff Knox of Augusta, Steve White Jr. of Rocky Face, and Brent Sizemore of Calhoun at the Georgia Mid-Amateur Championship at Augusta Country Club held on May 18-20.

Cloninger has now won four GSGA titles including the 1999 State Amateur Championship and the Match Play Championship, and the 2000 Public Links Championship. Cloninger had to persevere through several delays due to lighting in the area and heavy rain at times to capture this championship by 2-shot. Cloninger will try to capture his second State Amateur Championship this July, at Cherokee Town and Country Club in Atlanta.

Knox runner-up had a few untimely mistakes that possibly cost him a chance to win his first GSGA title, although he has been close several times including a tie for 13th last year in this event. Knox will try to qualify for the U.S. Amateur later this year, being held at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. White though it was his day when he hit a 9 iron on the par 3, 4th hole playing 137 yards and it ended up in the hole but it was not to be. First round leader Randy Donahoo of Woodstock finished tied for 18th, second round leader Stephen Welsh tied for 12th and last years champion Greg Kennedy of Duluth also tied for 12th.
