2004 Public Links Championship

Scott Pitts Wins Weather-Shortened Public Links Championship

McDonough, Ga. - Scott Pitts of Cornelia, the clubhouse leader after the opening round with a three-under par 68, was named the winner of the weather-shortened 16th Annual Georgia Public Links Championship, which took place at Georgia National Golf Club, August 28-29. Pitts had completed just five holes of his second round on the 6,907-yard par-71 when play was suspended for the afternoon wave.

The Championship was awarded according to the totals at the conclusion of the first round of play. Rome's Marty Ellison was named runner-up with his first round total of 70 and Martin Ball of Rome and Jonathan Jenkins of Jonesboro each carded an even-par 71 to finish in a tie for third.

Although the championship flight could not finish regulation, the morning wave completed their second round and the flight winners were determined by their two-round totals.

Mark Schultz of Atlanta paired together rounds of 76 and 73 to win the first flight by one stroke. Drew Brady of Elberton fired a second-round 73 to take the second flight. The third flight went to Jonesboro's Tommy Zielinski, who shot an 80-74. John Young of Atlanta, who was in the top ten after the first round of the championship, tallied a second-round 78 to capture the fourth flight. Hank Suessmith of Conyers won the competition in the fifth flight with a 158 two-round total. Jared Syx of Marietta took the sixth flight after rounds of 83 and 81.

The field of 144 golfers was determined by the low 72 entries plus another 72 drawn by lottery. The low 72 comprised the championship flight. The remainder of the field was divided among six flights, although all competitors were eligible for the overall title. Entrants must not have held privileges since January 1, 2004, at any club that does not extend playing privileges to the general public.
