2007 Senior Four-Ball Championship

Sappington and Ploeger Come From Behind to Capture Third Senior Four-Ball

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – Starting the day four strokes off the leaders' pace, Spencer Sappington of Milton and Bill Ploeger of Columbus fired a six-under 66 in the final round to come from behind and capture the title at the 16th annual Georgia Senior Four-Ball Championship. The event was held at Jekyll Island Golf Resort, November 14-16. Phil Pavoni and Edsel Davis, both of Macon, carded 71 in the final round and finished as the championship's runners-up with a 206.

Sappington and Ploeger, who captured Georgia Senior Four-Ball titles in 2000 and 2002, began the day with par but carded birdies on numbers two, three and four to quickly get to three-under on the round. Davis and Pavoni, playing in the day's final group, made birdies at two and seven but bogeys on three and nine led to them making the turn at even-par.

With each of the remaining lead teams turning at even-par, Sappington and Ploeger made their move on the inward nine. The duo posted birdies at 10, 11 and 12 and took the out-right lead. They would par the next two holes before Ploeger post back-to-back birdies on the 486-yard 15th hole and the par-3 16th.

"You should see this guy chip and putt," Sappington said of Ploeger's short game. "He kept us in this tournament. He's my friend, my buddy and he's a great champion."

The only major blemish of the day came on the final hole when the tandem settled for bogey. Sappington and Ploeger ended with a 32 on the inward nine and totaled 66 for the final round. This marks the third time that they have won the Georgia Senior Four-Ball Championship together.  This is Ploeger's fifth overall title at the event, having won twice previously with Billy Key of Columbus (1997 and 1999), and Sappington's fourth career win, his first coming in 1998 with partner Jerry Greenbaum of Greensboro.

Don Marsh of Alpharetta and Larry Clark of Cartersville, winners of the Senior Four-Ball in 2005, posted a one-under 71 to finish third overall. Three teams finished in a tie for fourth position with defending champions Karl Simon of Lawrenceville and Taylor Adams of St. Simons Island at 208. They were Roswell's Scott Northey and Dawsonville's Steven Prout, Columbus-tandem Bill Evans and Jim Lester and Joe Brogdon of Macon and Pete Malcolm of Duluth. Tied for eighth place with a 7-under 209 was Bill Blalock and Don Russell of Atlanta and 2003 champions Frank Perry of Fayettville and Mike Jackson of Martinez. John Carter and Ronald Waeghe, both of Greensboro and Curtis Wagner of Peachtree City and Mike Keeble of Newnan finished in a tie for tenth at 212.

Other flight winners were: first flight – John Washington of Macon and McDOnough's Randall Rozier tied with Marc Tate and Michael McAdams of Savannah at 207; second flight – Joey Phelan and Larry Sweat, both of Atlanta with 211; third flight – Bruce Swinsky of Dunwoody and Garry Briddon of Duluth carded 216; and in the fourth flight – Don Schrum of Flowery Branch and Len Kaper of Suwanee won with 224.

The Championship flight played each round at the 6,357-yard, par-72 Oleander course at Jekyll Island Golf Resort. The first through fourth flights played the Pine Lakes course which was playing as a par-72 at 6,303 yards.

The low 48 teams based on combined handicap index comprised the Championship Flight. The remainder of the field was determined by lottery and flighted by team handicap index. Only the competitors in the Championship flight were eligible for the overall title. Entries were open to male amateur golfers who are at least 55 years old, members of a GSGA member club and residents of Georgia. The maximum handicap differential between partners was six strokes.
