2005 Senior Four-Ball Championship

Don Marsh and Larry Clark Hold on to Win Senior Four-Ball

BLACKSHEAR, Ga. - Alpharetta's Don Marsh and Kennesaw's Larry Clark carded a final-round 73 and held on to capture the Georgia Senior Four-Ball Championship by two strokes. The event was held at Okefenokee Country Club in Blackshear and Lakes at Laura S. Walker in Waycross, November 16-18. Finishing in second place, also shooting 73 in the final round, were Mike Jackson, Sr. of Martinez and Frank Perry of Fayetteville.

Marsh and Clark started the day with bogeys on the third, fifth and seventh holes and fell one stroke behind Perry and Jackson, who made par on each of the first nine holes of play. Clark, however, hit his second shot to the green on the par-5 eighth and was able to connect on the birdie putt. Marsh followed suit by tallying a birdie on the ninth hole and the duo carried a one-stroke advantage at the turn. After making bogey at number 10 and squaring the score with Perry and Jackson, Clark went on to card birdies on three of the next five holes and get the tandem back to one-under-par for the day.

Jackson and Perry were able to close the gap on the 378-yard, 16th hole with a par. With the two teams tied going to 17, Perry failed to get up and down from the bunker and Jackson's three-putt left the partners back one stroke entering 18. Both Perry and Jackson failed to land their tee shots in the fairway and Clark's par was good enough to secure the two-stroke victory.

Defending champions Steven Hoffman and Ken Stewart of Savannah, fired a two-under 70 but would finish in third position. Macon's Phil Pavoni and Edsel Davis finished in fourth with a tournament total of 209. In fifth place with a six-under 210 were Bill Evans and Jimmy Coppage, both of Columbus. Four teams would finish the championship with a five-under 211. They were Ron Waeghe and John Carter of Greensboro, two-time champions Spencer Sappington of Alpharetta and Bill Ploeger of Columbus, Dalton's Mike Townsend and Calhoun's and Taylor Adams and Ron Eulenfeld of St. Simons Island. Savannah's Michael Towson and Fred Laist would round out the top ten with a 212.

Other flight winners were: first flight - Peachtree City's George LaProte and Ronnie Tatum tied with Roy Johnson of Alpharetta and Tad Moore of LaGrange at 211; second flight - Bruce Swinsky of Dunwoody and Garry Briddon with 211; third flight - Ed Tomblin of Tucker and Ray Dillon of Hartwell and Snellville's Bobby Johnson and Lawrenceville's Pete Martin each carded 221; and in the fourth flight - Ernie Hollifield of Kennesaw and George Whitman of Marietta won with 223.

The Championship flight played all three rounds at the 6,409-yard Okefenokee Country Club which was playing as a par-72. The first through fourth flights played the course at Lakes at Laura S. Walker.
