2004 Senior Four-Ball Championship

Steve Hoffman and Ken Stewart Win Georgia Senior Four-Ball in Playoff

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. - Savannah's Steve Hoffman and Ken Stewart held off the field with a final-round 69 and captured the title in a one-hole playoff against Spencer Sappington of Alpharetta and Bill Ploeger of Columbus at Georgia Senior Four-Ball Championship at Jekyll Island Golf Resort. Finishing tied for third at 205 after firing closing rounds of 66 and 68 were John Carter and Ron Waeghe of Greensboro and Bob Nance of Calhoun and Mike Townsend of Dalton.

Hoffman and Stewart carded birdies on both par fives on the front nine and on the par-four eleventh hole. They collected par on each of the seven final holes that they would play to finish with a tournament total of 204 and force the playoff with Sappington and Ploeger, the 2002 champions whose three birdies and bogey would leave them at 70 for the final round.

On the playoff hole, each competitor would land theirdrive in the fairway. Hoffman, Stewart and Sappington would each hit the green in regulation but Ploeger's approach landed just off the right side of the green. Ploeger's chip would only catch the lip of the hole before coming to rest within two feet. Sappington just missed his 20-foot birdie attempt and settled for par. Stewart couldn't connect on his birdie attempt but Hoffman drained his seven-footer for a birdie and the win.

Defending champions Frank Perry of Fayetteville and Mike Jackson, Sr. of Martinez, fired a two-under 70but would finish in a tie for fifth with Ed Moore of Conyers and Jerry Gibson of Hiawassee, winners of the first flight, at 206. Three teams would finish the championship with a nine-under 207. They were Bob Smith of Swainsboro and Boyd Johnson of Statesboro, Duluth's Brian Johnston and Edmund Jones, and second flightwinners Charlie Edwards of Newnan and Ted Vallo of Peachtree City. Larry Clark of Kennesaw and Mark Kirk of Marietta would round out the top ten with Savannah's Frank Aliffi and Victor Jarvis and Dalton's Chris Hall and Gary Cole at 208.

Other flight winners were: third - Gene Jabaley of Woodstock and Rick Donnahoo of Rossville (211); fourth - Bob Dutlinger and Jeff Tindle, both of Alpharetta (209); fifth - Kennesaw's Bob Flynn and Don Gardner (217); and sixth - Ed Tomblin of Tucker and Tony Pistorio of Jasper (221).

The low 24 teams based on combined handicap index comprised the Championship flights. The remainder of the field was determined by lottery and flighted by team handicap index. Players in the Championship A and B and the first and second flights were eligible for the overall title and played the Pine Lakes Course in the first and final rounds, rotating with the other four flights, who started on the Indian Mounds course.
