Atlanta Athletic Club Captures Georgia Team Championship by Three
Consistency pushes Athletic Club to overall title

STATHAM, Ga. – Atlanta Athletic Club turned in scores of 74, 75 and 76 in the individual stroke play round to post a team total of 367 and win its first Georgia Team Championship since the event changed to its current format. Atlanta Athletic Club finished at 7-over par to, three strokes ahead of Johns Creek's Rivermont Golf and Country Club and Laurel Springs Golf Club of Suwanee, who each posted 370 to tie for runner-up honors.

Pinetree Golf Club of Kennesaw placed fourth at 11-over 371. Athens Country Club, the Georgia Club of Statham and defending champion Dalton Golf and Country Club finished tied for fifth at 12-over 372. Three teams tied for eighth at 13-over 373. Those teams were Hamilton Mill Golf Club of Dacula, Alpharetta Athletic Club and first-round leader Cartersville Country Club.

In the final round, which featured best-three-of-four stroke play scoring, Atlanta Athletic Club showed true consistency, firing four rounds in in the 70s. Suwanee's Jeff Koontz posted 74, Doug Green of Cumming tallied 75 and Atlanta's West Streib and Hal Hobgood of Alpharetta each carded 76.

Laurel Springs Golf Club was tied for sixth after the opening round but jumped up the leader board thanks to a 3-under 69 from DeWitt Weaver of Suwanee.

Only one other players broke par in the final round. David Noll Jr. of Dalton Golf and Country Club, the reigning Atlanta Amateur Match Play Champion and past Georgia Amateur Champion, also carded 69.

The Georgia Club, which hosted the Team Championship for the fourth-consecutive year, played to approximately 7,238 yards and a par of 72. Teams played the Red and Black nines.

GSGA began awarding the Georgia Team Championship to Member Clubs in 1927, recognizing the club with the two members posting the lowest 36-hole scores in the Georgia Amateur Championship. In the mid-1980s, a separate competition began with clubs playing one another in matches at an agreed-upon site. Since 1993, the championship has been played in its current format at a time and place determined by the GSGA. Entries were open to four-man teams of male amateur golfers who are Georgia residents and selected by their GSGA member club. The field was open to 30 teams on a first come, first serve basis.
