Lanier Golf Club Defends Title at Georgia Team Championship

STATHAM, Ga. - Lanier Golf Club of Cumming captured its second-straight and seventh of the last nine Georgia Team Championships, winning by six strokes over runners-up Dalton Golf and Country Club and Berkeley Hills Country Club of Duluth. The Georgia Team Championship took place at The Georgia Club, October 29-30.

Lanier's team of Jeff Belk of Marietta, Al Everett of Cumming, Matt Robbins of Cumming and Dave Sexton of Suwanee posted a final-round score of 4-over-par 217 in the best-three-of-four stroke play format for a tournament total of 7-under 348. Dalton G&CC and Berkeley Hills CC, which were tied for third after the first round, both carded 3-over 216 in the final round to place second at 1-under 354.

Ansley Golf Club of Atlanta, which trailed first-round leader Lanier by three strokes going into the final round, shot 8-over 221 to drop to fourth at even-par 355, one stroke back of Dalton and Berkeley Hills. St. Ives Country Club placed fifth at 357, while Athens Country Club took sixth place at 3-over 358. The Brickyard at Riverside of Macon placed seventh at 359, with Sunset Hills Country Club of Carrollton finishing one stroke back in eighth (360).

Sexton led the way for Lanier GC, shooting 70 on The Georgia Club's 6,929-yard, par-71 layout. Sexton made the turn at 3-under with five birdies on the front nine, including birdies on holes 1, 2 and 3 to start the round. Robbins carded an even-par 71 for the team, playing a steady round with three birdies and three bogies. Everett contributed a 76 to Lanier's winning effort.

Dalton G&CC was led by David Noll Jr.'s field-low score of 67. Noll, a Dalton resident, eagled the 604-yard 10th hole and carded three more birdies with just one bogey on the day. Mike Nance of Calhoun added a 71 to Dalton's effort. Berkeley Hills' Hector Cora of Atlanta was the only other player besides Noll to break 70, firing a 68 which included five birdies.

Just five players broke par in the final round. In addition to Sexton, Noll and Cora, Bob Royak of Alpharetta and St. Ives CC turned in a 70, as did Donny Wysoczynski of Carrollton and Sunset Hills CC.

Lanier Golf Club has enjoyed quite a run in the Georgia Team Championship. Since the current format began in 1993, Lanier has captured titles in 1996, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2005. Belk has been a part of five of those winning squads (all since 2000), while Robbins was also member of last year's winning team.

Final-round tee times were delayed 47 minutes due to frost. The shotgun start began at 9:47 a.m.

Entries were open to four-man teams of male amateur golfers who are Georgia residents and selected by their GSGA member club. The field was open to 30 teams on a first come, first serve basis.
