Lanier Golf Club Rallies to Win Georgia Team Championship

CLARKESVILLE, Ga. - Lanier Golf Club in Cumming started the final round five strokes off the lead but would fire three rounds under par and finish with a 346 to capture their fourth come-from-behind victory in the past five years and sixth title overall at the Georgia Team Championship, which took place at The Orchard Golf and Country Club in Clarkesville, October 23-24. Ansley Golf Club-Settindown Creek finished as the runner-up, three strokes behind Lanier, with a tournament total of 349. Marietta Country Club posted a 352 team total to take third.

Taking home the trophy for Lanier are 2003 and 2004 Georgia Senior Champion Spencer Sappington, 2004 Public Links Champion Scott Pitts, 2002 Atlanta Amateur Champion Jeff Belk and Matt Robbins. Ansley Golf Club-Settindown Creek's team featured two-time Atlanta Amateur Champion Rocky Costa, along with Dan Barkley, Matt Hayes and Matt Russell. Marietta was represented by 2001 Georgia Amateur runner-up Randy Donahoo, who carded the lowest score of the second round (67), Greg Cotrell, Hap Fleming and Frank Mann, Jr.

Dalton Golf and Country Club, led by 2003 Georgia Amateur Champion David Noll, Jr., began the day with a five stroke advantage but would finish fourth scoring a 354 team total and Cartersville Country Club would round out the top five with a score of 357.

The final round was individual stroke play, with the three best 18-hole scores counting as the team's score. The first round included two four-ball scores for each team.

The Georgia Team Championship began in 1927 as an award presented to the GSGA member club withthe two members with the lowest 36-hole scores in the Georgia Amateur Championship. In the mid 1980s, a separate competition began with clubs playing one another in matches at an agreed upon site. Since 1993, the championship has been played in its current format and at a time and place determined by the GSGA.

Entries were open to male amateur golfers who are Georgia residents and members of a GSGA Member Club. A Club official had to recognize the team, and entries were accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
