Rivermont Golf and Country Club Claims Rain-Shortened Georgia Team Championship

CLARKESVILLE, Ga. - First-round leaders Rivermont Golf and Country Club in Alpharetta claimed their first Georgia Team Championship after heavy rains forced the cancellation of the final round of play at The Orchard Golf and Country Club. Rivermont's 11-under 133 in the opening four-ball round gave them a four-stroke victory over Cateechee Golf Club in Hartwell and Marietta Country Club in Kennesaw.

The field, which teed off with a shotgun start, was able to play about nine holes of the final round despite the rain, but additional heavy downpours made the greens unplayable and play was halted. With more rain and lightening expected throughout the day, the final round was cancelled and the championship was shortened to 18 holes.

Taking home the trophy for Rivermont are Don Marsh, Curt Knorr, Brandon Nelson and Chris Wickline. Cateechee's team featured 2002 Georgia Amateur champion Jonathan Shiflet, along with Jeremy Rogers, Eddie McCurley and Bill Rogers. Marietta was represented by 2001 Georgia Amateur runner-up Randy Donahoo, Hicks Malonson, Greg Borders and Mike Cole.

Cartersville Country Club finished third at 138. Three-time defending champions Lanier Golf Club in Cumming, looking to pick up their fourth-straight, come-from-behind victory and sixth championship overall, had to settle for a tie for fifth with Valdosta Country Club and Berkeley Hills Country Club at 139.

The final round was to be individual stroke play, with the three best 18-hole scores counting as the team's score. The first round included two four-ball scores for each team.

The Georgia Team Championship began in 1927 as an award presented to the GSGA member club with the two members with the lowest 36-hole scores in the Georgia Amateur Championship. In the mid 1980s, a separate competition began with clubs playing one another in matches at an agreed upon site. Since 1993, the championship has been played in its current format and at a time and place determined by the GSGA.

Entries were open to male amateur golfers who are Georgia residents and members of a GSGA Member Club. A Club official had to recognize the team, and entries were accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
