2008 Women’s Team Championship

Brenda Pictor and Ginette Spinucci Capture Georgia Women's Team Title

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Brenda Pictor of Marietta and Ginette Spinucci of Stone Mountain fired a seven-under-par 64 in the final round to hold off local duo Danielle Davis and Julie Criss, both of St. Simons Island, and win the 23rd annual Georgia Women's Team Championship which took place at Sea Palms Golf Resort, September 8-9. Newnan's Jodie Shepard and Cheryl Drewyer forged ahead one spot after posting a final-round 69 to finish third.

This marks the first win for Pictor, the GSGA's reigning co-Senior Women's Player of the Year, at teh Georgia Women's Team Championship and is Spinucci's third-career victory. Spinucci captured her first two titles in 2005 and 2006 while teamed with Marilyn Nolan-Johnson. This is the first time that Pictor and Spinucci have teamed together.

Tied in fourth place was Mary Helen McElreath of Augusta and Sandra Moody of Waynesboro, who carded an even-par 71 in the final round, and Athens-duo Elaine Carsel and Nancy Hendrix. Both teams ended with a three-over 145 for the championship. Betsy Butler of Atlanta and her partner Phyllis Foisy of Statham finished in a three-way tie for sixth position with Jesup's Maria Johnson and Marietta's Marilyn Nolan-Johnson and Pamela Mitchell of Atlanta and Sydney Dunning of Marietta at 147. Finishing alone in ninth, with a 149 total, was Elaine Montano of Augusta and Sherry Hutchet of Peachtree City. Decatur's Barbara McCracken teamed with Atlanta's Susan Tucker to finish tenth overall with a 157.

Other flight winners included Janice Atterberry of Dahlonega and Sylvia Grogan of Gainesville from the first flight (142), Sue Loeffler of Monroe and Roswell's Suzanne Murray in flight two (138), Duluth's Dana Seay and Clayton's Pat Cunningham in the third flight (146), in the fourth flight, Dahlonega's Debbie Smith and Bogart's Shelley Smith tied Alicia Miller of Gainesville and Connie Folk of Dahlonega (153), and in the fifth flight, with a 160, was Dee Earp of Roswell and Judith Robertson of Suwanee.

The Championship flight, the only flight eligible for the overall title, was playing the course at Sea Palms Golf Resort at approximately 5,582 yards. The remaining flights played from approximately 5,126 yards. All flights were playing the course as a par 71.

Entries were open to two-person teams of female amateur golfers who belong to a GSGA member club and are residents of Georgia. Teammates must have a handicap differential of no more than eight strokes and players must have reached the age of 18 by September 8.
