Williams and Marshall Capture First Victory at Georgia Women's Team Championship

ALBANY, Ga. – Beth Williams of Atlanta and Tracy Marshall of Canton carded a four-under par 68 in the final round to hold off three other teams and capture the Georgia Women's Team Championship which took place at Doublegate Country Club, September 10-11. Marilyn Nolan-Johnson of Marietta and Ginette Spinucci of Stone Mountain, the defending champions, finished tied for runner-up honors with Atlanta's Betsy Butler and Statham's Phyllis Foisy and Alpharetta's Kristin Gheesling and Susan Svensson of Smyrna at 147. The three runner-up teams finished nine strokes behind Williams and Marshall.

Alone in fifth place was Mary Helen McElreath of Augusta and Sandra Moody of Waynesboro, who carded a final-round 69 to finish at 149 for the championship.  Athens-duo Elaine Carsel and Nancy Hendrix tied with Jan Cross of Evans and Sherrie Tindle of Alpharetta for sixth position at 154. Finishing eighth was Alice Richardson and Belinda Marsh, both of Alpharetta, who carded a 75 during the final round to finish at 156. Ninth place went to Newnan-partners Cheryl Drewyer and Jodie Shepard. Maureen Daugherty of Roswell and Sue Guion of Alpharetta totaled a 170 and finished tenth.

This is the first victory for Williams and Marshall and the first time that they have teamed up for this event.

"This was the first time that I have participated in this event," Marshall explained. "Everyone did such a great job running the tournament and it was really fun to be a part of it."

Other flight winners included Sharon Sheffield of Macon and Teresa Register of Smarr from the first flight (147), Karen Stewart of Columbus and Patty Hudspeth of Midland in flight two (151), Dahlonega's Debbie Smith and Bogart's Shelley Smith in flight three (157), in the fourth flight was Jane Hall of Americus and Pamela Pangle of Atlanta (160), and in the fifth flight, with a 163, was Albany-duo Cissy Smith and Joyce Gaines.

The Championship flight, the only flight eligible for the overall title, was playing the course at Doublegate Country Club at approximately 5,830 yards. The remaining flights played from approximately 5,277 yards. All flights were playing the course as a par 72.

Entries were open to two-person teams of female amateur golfers who belong to a GSGA member club and are residents of Georgia. Teammates must have a handicap differential of no more than eight strokes and players must have reached the age of 18 by September 10.
