2006 Women’s Team Championship

Nolan-Johnson and Spinucci Capture Second Straight Georgia Women's Team Championship

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Marilyn Nolan-Johnson of Marietta and Ginette Spinucci of Stone Mountain carded a birdie on the fourth playoff hole to hold off Atlanta's Betsy Butler and Statham's Phyllis Foisy and capture their second straight title at the Georgia Women's Team Championship. The 21st annual Championship took place at The Hampton Club, October 17-18.

Nolan-Johnson and Spinucci posted a 4-under 68 in the final round to match Butler and Foisy (76-69) at 145 for the event. After halving the first three playoff holes, Nolan-Johnson contacted on a 20-foot birdie putt to claim the victory for the defending champions.

Cathy Cunningham of St. Simons Island and Cheryl Grigg of Sea Island carded a final-round 71 to finish at 146 for the championship, one-stroke behind the champions. Maria Johnson of Jesup and Perry's Mary Riley finished in fourth position at 147. The Alpharetta-duo of Belinda Marsh and Alice Richardson, the leaders entering the final round, fell to fifth place after carding 74 in the final round. In sixth place at 150 was Adrienne Simmons and Danielle Feldberg, both of Acworth. Greensboro-tandem, Ena Harvey and Susan Tully, finished with a championship total of 153, good for seventh place. In eighth was Elaine Carsel and Nancy Hendrix, both of Athens, who combined for a 154.

This is the second consecutive victory for Nolan-Johnson and Spinucci. They are the fourth team in the championship's history to successfully defend the title. The last to do so was Augusta's Laura Coble and Valdosta's Karen Whidby (Parker) in 2000 and 2001. Spinucci has captured other GSGA titles, including the Greater Atlanta Women's Amateur Championship (1988, 1990), Top 40 Women's Classic (1995) and the Senior Women's Championship (2001, 2002).

Other flight winners included Jane Barrick and Pat Koch of Savannah from the first flight (147), Bonnie Brannin of Reynolds and Lori Soles of Perry in flight two (147), Dahlonega's Janice Atterberry and Cumming's Laura Palmore in flight three (154), in the fourth flight was Joann Noel of Atlanta and Judy Meredith of Greensboro (160), Perry's Brenda Duke and Juliette's Putzie Patterson in the fifth flight (171), and Dee Earp of Roswell and Judith Robertson of Suwanee in the sixth flight (171).

The Championship flight, the only flight eligible for the overall title, was playing the course at The Hampton Club at approximately 5,600 yards. The remaining flights played from approximately 5,291 yards. All flights were playing the course as a par 72.

Entries were open to two-person teams of female amateur golfers who belong to a GSGA member club and are residents of Georgia. Teammates must have a handicap differential of no more than eight strokes and players must have reached the age of 18 by October 17.

GSGA conducts 18 statewide competitions for men and women of all age groups, four interstate matches and 17 USGA qualifying events each year. Other services include computerized handicapping, course rating and measuring, a summer-long junior sectional competitions program, Golf Georgia magazine and two college scholarship programs.
