Nolan-Johnson and Spinucci Shoot Final-Round 68 to Win Georgia Women's Team Championship

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. - Marilyn Nolan-Johnson of Marietta and Ginette Spinucci of Stone Mountain carded a tournament-low score of 4-under 68 in the final round to capture the Georgia Women's Team Championship by two strokes over defending champions Maria Johnson of Jesup and Danielle Davis of St. Simons Island. The 20th Annual Championship took place at The Hampton Club, October 18-19.

The two teams at the top of the leaderboard were tied after 18 holes, but Nolan-Johnson and Spinucci totaled 5-under 139 (71-68) for the event, while Johnson and Davis, with a final-round 70, finished at 3-under 141. The duo of Kristin Gheesling of Alpharetta and Susan Svensson of Smyrna and Eatonton's Rebecca Rocker and Donna Gonsalves tied for third at 143.

Five teams tied for fifth place overall, including Debra Partridge of Roswell and Mary McElreath of Augusta and first-flight competitors Shelby Stanfield of Alpharetta and Jackie Sexton of Cumming, Cheryl Drewyer and Jodie Shepard of Newnan, Phyllis Foisy of Statham and Betsy Butler of Atlanta and Alpharetta's Belinda Marsh and Alice Richardson. Drewyer and Shepard carded a second-round 69 after opening with 78 to share top honors in the first flight.

Rounding out the top-10 were Elaine Carsel and Nancy Hendrix of Athens along with first-flight competitors Helen Kirbo and Nancy Abraham of Albany. Carsel and Hendrix rebounded from an opening 79 to shoot 69 in the final round and move up in the standings.

Nolan-Johnson and Spinucci joined forces for their first Women's Team Championship, although Spinucci has captured other GSGA titles, including the Greater Atlanta Women's Amateur Championship (1988, 1990), Top 40 Women's Classic (1995) and the Senior Women's Championship (2001, 2002).

Other flight champions included Lisa Pennington of Evans and Pam Mitchell of Atlanta in flight two (152), Marietta's Jane Dazey and Mary Bowmaster in flight three (152), Joann Noel of Atlanta and Judy Meredith of Greensboro in the fourth flight (162), Warner Robins' Alison Wright and Kimberley Piper in the fifth flight (162), and Diana Showalter of Clarkston and Pat Miller of Alpharetta in the sixth flight (173).

Entries were open to two-person teams of female amateur golfers who are GSGA members, Georgia residents and have a maximum handicap differential of eight strokes between them. The field of 67 teams was divided into seven flights by combined handicap index.

The Championship and first flights played from the same tees (approximately 5,600 yards) and were eligible for the overall title. The remaining flights played from approximately 5,291 yards. All flights played the course as a par 72.

GSGA conducts 18 statewide competitions for men and women of all age groups, three interstate matches and 17 USGA qualifying events each year. Other services include computerized handicapping, course rating and measuring, a summer-long junior sectional competitions program, Golf Georgia magazine and two college scholarship programs.
