Danielle Davis, Maria Johnson Win Georgia Women's Team Championship in a Playoff

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Danielle Davis of St. Simons Island and Maria Johnson of Jesup scored par on the first playoff hole to win the Georgia Women's Team Championship over defending champions Ellen Dempsey of Sea Island and Cheryl Grigg of St. Simons Island. The 19th Annual event took place at Wilmington Island Club, Oct. 19-20.

Both teams finished regulation at two-over par 144 after carding identical scores of 71-73 in the 36-hole, four-ball format. The teams played No. 18 in the playoff, with Davis sinking a four-foot par putt to claim the victory.

Mary McElreath of Augusta and Debra Partridge of Roswell, carded a second-round 70 - the low score of the championship - to vault from seventh to third place in the final standings and finish one stroke back at three-over 145 (75-70). Past champions Lee Burton of Newnan and Laura Coble of Augusta tied for fourth place at 147 (72-75) with Sayuri Barclay of Cartersville and Barbara Brown of Carrollton (74-73) and Kris Gheesling of Alpharetta and Susan Svensson of Smyrna (73-74).

The duo of Charlotte Grant of Greensboro and Claudeen Lindberg of Atlanta, who began the day tied for the lead with Davis/Johnson and Dempsey/Grigg after an opening 71, fell back with 79 in the final round and finished seventh.

First-flight competitors Bonnie Grizzard of Rome and Betty Rich of Villa Rica placed eighth overall with a pair of 77s, while Athens' Elaine Carsel and Nancy Hendrix finished ninth at 155 (76-79). Rounding out the top 10 were Marsha Whitener of Dalton and Rochelle Weaver of Resaca, who carded 156 (79-77) while competing in the first flight.

Entries were open to two-person teams of female amateur golfers who are GSGA members, Georgia residents and have a maximum handicap differential of eight strokes between them. The field of 85 teams was divided into seven flights by combined handicap index.

The Championship and first flights played from the same tees (5,697 yards) and were eligible for the overall title. The remaining flights competed from 5,273 yards. All flights played the course as a par 71.

Other flight champions included Louise Beaudoin of Alpharetta and Carole Cavanaugh of Sharpsburg in the second flight (155) and Di Scott of Atlanta and Elizabeth Shreiner of Marietta in the third flight (166). Valerie Keys and Ann Kirk, both of Marietta, captured fourth-flight honors (165), while Barbara Kester of Canton and Charlene Rose of Woodstock won the fifth flight (175). In flight six, Dee Earp of Roswell and Judith Robertson of Suwanee tied for first place with Sue Colson and Evelyn Jones, both of Marietta (182).
