2003 Women’s Team Championship

Ellen Dempsey and Cheryl Grigg Capture Georgia Women's Team Championship

ST. MARYS, Ga. - Ellen Dempsey of St. Simons Island and Cheryl Griggs of Sea Island shot a final-round, four-under 68 for a one-under 143 total and a one-stroke victory over two other teams at the Georgia Women's Team Championship held at Osprey Cove Golf Club. Opening-round leaders Laura Coble of Augusta and Lee Burton of Newnan fell short with a closing 70 to finish at 144, along with Beth Williams of Atlanta and 2002 champion Virginia Tyson of Macon, who shot 68 in the scramble format.

Coble and Burton, who hold six titles in the event between them, lost their narrow lead from the opening four-ball round by the turn and were two down after Dempsey and Griggs birdied 11 and 14. Coble and Burton's birdie at the par-5 18th only served to give them a tie for second with the late charging Williams and Tyson team, who combined for five birdies on their final nine holes, shooting 37-31-68.

First-flight competitors Shelby Stanfield of Alpharetta and Jackie Sexton of Cumming finished a distant fourth in the overall standings at 155 after a closing 73.  Finishing tied for fifth at 157 were Jean Davis of Kathleen and Barbara Stuart of Macon and Dianna Johnson and Sue Bush of Savannah.

Ann Railey of Lawrenceville and Betty Smith of Cumming shot a final-round 73 to overcome a seven-stroke deficit and capture second-flight honors with a 162 total. Tying for first in the third flight at 167 were Susan Lee of Lilburn and Pat Coggins of Atlanta and Mary Bowmaster and Cynthia Crain of Marietta. The Championship through third flights played from the same tees (5,795 yards) and were eligible for the overall title.

The other flight winners, who played the course as a par 71 at 5,390 yards, were: fourth - Melanie Moore and Sharon Bass of Calhoun (157); fifth - Carolyn Swart of Marietta and Carmen Andia of Atlanta (163); sixth - Yvette Miranda of St. Simons Island and Debra Kalister of Jekyll Island (172); and seventh - Judith Robertson of Suwanee and Dee Earp of Roswell (180).

Entries were open to female amateur golfers who are Georgia residents and members of a GSGA Member Club. The field of 80 teams was divided into eight flights by team handicap indexes. The Championship through third flights played from the same tees (5,795 yards) and are eligible for the overall title. The remaining flights are playing the course as a par 71 from 5,390 yards.

GSGA conducts 17 statewide competitions for men and women of all age groups, three interstate matches and 17 USGA qualifying events each year.
