2002 Women’s Team Championship

Shannon Silvernail and Virginia Tyson Win Georgia Women's Team Championship

ST. MARY'S, Ga. - First-round leaders Shannon Silvernail and Virginia Tyson of Macon shot a final-round six-under 66 for a two-day total of 137 and a three-stroke victory at the Georgia Women's Team Championship, which was held at Osprey Cove Golf Club, October 22-23. Claudeen Lindberg of Atlanta and Charlotte Grant of Greensboro, who were one back after the opening four-ball round, finished second at 140, carding a 68 in the scramble portion of the event.

Two-time defending champions Laura Coble of Augusta and Karen Parker of Valdosta finished seven strokes back at even-par 144 after a final-round 69.  Finishing a distant fourth at 149 was Maria Johnson of Jesup and Danielle Davis of St. Simons Island. Tied for fifth overall at 150 were Marilyn Nolan-Johnson of Marietta and Ellen Connors of Newnan and first flight winners Barbara Stuart of Macon and Jean Davis of Kathleen.

Silvernail and Tyson improved upon their fifth-place finish in last year's event. This is Silvernail's second GSGA title, having won the Women' Top 40 Competition in 2001. She was edged out in 2002 by Grant, a former LPGA Tour Player. In 2000, Silvernail narrowly lost the Georgia Women's Amateur Championship to Lindberg in a playoff.

Second flight winners Liz Butler and Shirley Davis of Columbus tied for tenth overall at 156. Other flight winners were: third - Kathleen Gill and Tori Nichols of Marietta; fourth - (tie) Sue Marshall of Marietta and Di Scott of Atlanta and Betty Jo Braselton of Cumming and Sally Seebeck of Roswell; fifth - Mary Bowmaster and Cynthia Crain of Marietta; sixth - Betty Causey and Lorene Potts of Calhoun; seventh - Carmen Andia of Atlanta and Carolyn Swart of Marietta; eighth - Barbara Kester of Canton and Charlene Rose of Woodstock; and ninth - JoAnn Goodroe of Roswell and Carole Hoskins of Dalton.

Entries were open to female amateur golfers who are Georgia residents and members of a GSGA Member Club. Teams with the lowest 10 handicap indexes comprise the Championship flight. The remaining 90 teams in the field were selected by lottery and divided into nine other flights by handicap indexes. The Championship through fourth flights played from the same tees (5,591 yards) and were eligible for the overall title.

GSGA conducts 18 statewide competitions for men and women of all age groups, three interstate matches, one Atlanta-area competition and 17 USGA qualifying events each year. Other services include computerized handicapping, course rating and measuring, a summer-long junior sectional competitions program, Golf Georgia magazine and two college scholarship programs.
