2001 Women’s Team Championship

Coble and Whidby Repeat as Women's Team Champions

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, GA - 2000 Champions and first round co-leaders Laura Coble of Augusta and Karen Whidby of Valdosta defended their title convincingly, winning by five strokes after firing an 11-under 61 in the final round of the Georgia Women's Team Championship, which was held at the Sea Palms Golf Resort, October 23-24. Kathi Eutzler of Atlanta and Marilyn Nolan-Johnson of Marietta finished second with a two-day total of 134, gaining ground on the field with a closing 62 in Wednesday's scramble format. Coble and Whidby finished at 129 after opening with a four-ball score of 68.

Finishing in a tie for third at 135 were 1999 Champions Patti McMillan of Cumming and Ellen Dempsey of St. Simons Island, who shared the first round lead, and Ginette Spinucci of Stone Mountain and Andi Anderson of Woodstock, who held their position with a 64.

More than this title was at stake for Eutzler, who needed to finish ahead of Coble in this final event of the season to maintain her narrow lead in the points race for GSGA Player of the Year. Eutzler hoped she and her partner Nolan-Johnson were making up ground with their four-under front nine, only to learn her rival's team had four birdies and an eagle on the front and had stretched their lead to six strokes. Coble, who has won this event three previous times and the Player of the Year Award three years straight, continued to put her team in birdie position and combined with Whidby on the greens to collect five more birdies and the championship.

First Flight winners Nancy Hendrix and Elaine Carsell of Athens tied for fifth overall with Virginia Tyson and Shannon Silvernail of Macon at 141. Suzie Tindall and Sue Tucker of Atlanta shared Second Flight honors with Margaret Martin and Mary Czentnar of Rome at 152.

Entries were open to female amateur golfers who are Georgia residents and members of a GSGA Member Club. Teams with the lowest 10 handicap indexes comprised the Championship Flight. The remaining 90 teams in the field were selected by lottery and divided into nine other flights by handicap indexes.

GSGA conducts 16 statewide competitions for men and women of all age groups, four interstate matches, two Atlanta area competitions and 17 USGA qualifying events each year. Other services include computerized handicapping, course rating and measuring, a summer-long junior sectional competitions program, Golf Georgia magazine and two college scholarship programs.
