2009 Four-Ball Tournament

Benson and Malcolm Capture Georgia Four-Ball Tournament
New champs make birdie to win one-hole playoff

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Jack Benson of Dunwoody and Pete Malcolm of Duluth carded birdie on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff to capture the 21st annual Georgia Four-Ball Tournament, which took place at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club and Valdosta Country Club, March 27-29. Benson and Malcolm, who made par on the final hole of regulation to force the playoff, defeated Danny Daniels of Kingsland and Valdosta's Phil Alday. Both teams posted a 36-hole score of seven-under-par 137.

Albany-duo Craig Taylor and Dwayne Hale, who won the 2007 Georgia Four-Ball Tournament, finished tied for third position overall with first-round leaders Clay Stephenson and Hal Lamb of Calhoun and McDonough's David Maddox and Scot Ward. Four teams tied for sixth at two-under 142. They are Bobby Filkins of Marietta and Chris Filkins of Kennesaw, Newnan's Clay Gardner and Fayetteville's John Miles, Benny Clark of Lawrenceville and Kevin Ceasman of Duluth and – the winners of the third flight – Austin Bramblett of Lawrenceville and Lee Bradley of Suwanee. Loganville's Michael Lott and Covington's Stephen Hall tied for tenth place at 143 with Charles Hobbs of Blakely and Joe Peters of Watkinsville and Drew Sylvester and John Schuster, both of Alpharetta.

The championship through third flights were eligible for the overall tournament honors. The field of 96 teams was divided into eight flights based on team handicap index. The field, which was determined by lottery, alternated between the two host clubs, with the top four flights playing their first round at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club and second round at Valdosta Country Club.

Other flight winners were fourth – Don Paige of Lawrenceville and Ed Cordell or Norcross (144); fifth – Valdosta's Joe Griffin and Russ Collett (144); sixth – Ben Sorrells and David Ensley, both of Evans (146); and seventh – Roland Sorel of Alpharetta and Steve Mann of Duluth (152).

The tournament began Friday morning, but the opening round was suspended due to thunderstorms. As a result, the event was reduced from 54 to 36 holes. The first round was completed Saturday morning.

Entries were open to two-man teams of male amateur golfers who are members of a GSGA member club and whose combined handicap index is 4.0 or higher.
