2008 Four-Ball Tournament

Blake Clanton and Dwayne Hale Capture Georgia Four-Ball Tournament

Albany, Ga. – Blake Clanton and Dwayne Hale, both of Albany, posted a two-under 70 in the final round to capture the 20th annual Georgia Four-Ball Tournament, which took place at River Pointe Golf Club and Stonebridge Golf and Country Club, March 28-30. Hale, a member at River Pointe Golf Club, teamed with Clanton to finish with a tournament-record of 199 (-17). Fellow Albanians Andrew Dismuke and Craig Taylor finished in second, just one stroke off the pace, at 18-under-par 200.

Hale and Clanton's 54-hole record-setting score came via rounds of 65, 64 and 70. The previous record of 201 was set by Kennesaw-tandem Ryan Evans and Rob Wiggins during the 2006 Georgia Four-Ball Tournament held at Valdosta Country Club and Kinderlou Forest Golf Club. This marks Hale's second consecutive victory in this event, having won last year with Craig Taylor of the runners-up duo.

Dick Donegan of Kennesaw and Leigh Mackey of Watkinsville moved up one spot to finish tied for third position with Clay Gardner of Newnan and John Miles of Fayetteville at nine-under. Tied for the fifth spot, at eight-under-par 208, was Alpharetta's Don Marsh and Mark Allison of Norcross and Clay Stephenson and Hal Lamb, both of Calhoun. Clay Chester and Randy Alford of Albany finished tied for seventh place with Atlanta's Greg Greenbaum and Jay Baker. Alone in ninth was Albany-duo Bill Clanton and Shane Brinson. Rounding out the top-ten, with a tournament total of 211, was Jason Myers and Rhett Smith of Kennesaw.

The championship through third flights were eligible for the overall tournament honors. The field of 96 teams was divided into eight flights based on team handicap index. The field, which was determined by lottery, alternated between the two host clubs, with the top four flights playing their first and third rounds at River Pointe Golf Club.

Other flight winners were third – Todd Green of Marietta and Tom Holman of Canton (212); fourth – (three teams tied) George Akins of Moultrie and Ricky Tucker of Tifton, Marietta's Larry Fowler and Roberta's Wade Turner and Alp Kupculongu of Ellenwood and Newnan's Jimmy Ford (214); fifth – (tie) Lee Smith of Forsyth and Patrick O'Brien of Macon and Jeff Thorne of Sylvester and Valdosta's Jim Langdale (215); sixth – Austin Bramblett of Snellville and Lee Bradley of Suwanee (208); and seventh – Byron's Keli Smith and Steve Roland of Warner Robins (223).

Entries were open to two-man teams of male amateur golfers who are members of a GSGA member club and residents of Georgia and whose combined handicap index is 4.0 or higher.

Founded in 1916, the Georgia State Golf Association (GSGA) received its official charter on June 24, 1924. Since that date, the GSGA has grown to one of the largest state amateur golf associations in the country, with over 365 member clubs and 85,000 individual members. With a mission to promote and preserve amateur golf in the state of Georgia, GSGA offers a computerized handicapping service, course rating and measuring, and annually conducts a full schedule of statewide competitions for men and women of all age groups. Other services include a summer-long junior sectional program, award-winning Golf Georgia magazine, membership recognition and rewards programs and a charitable foundation administering two college scholarship programs.
