2003 Four-Ball Tournament

Heyer and Rhoads Survive Playoff, Win Georgia Four-Ball Tournament

ALBANY, Ga. - Tom Heyer and Dan Rhoads of Albany defeated and Tim Mackey of Bogart and David Mansfield of Dalton on the first playoff hole to win the 15th Annual Georgia Four-Ball Tournament, held at Stonebridge Golf and Country Club and River Pointe Golf Club March 28-30. Heyer and Rhoads, who led from the first round and held a four-stroke lead at 13 under par, shot a six-over 78 in the final round at Stonebridge to fall back into a tie at seven-under 209. Mackey and Mansfield managed a one-under 71 in gusty conditions to move up from a tie for third and into the playoff.

Heyer and Rhoads, who are members at River Pointe and Stonebridge respectively, parred the first playoff hole (18), while Mackey and Mansfield bogeyed. Mike Ingles and Robert Clark of Kingsland, who won the first flight and were in second place overall going into the final round, also finished at 209, but missed the playoff when they left the course before the tournament concluded. Heyer and Rhoads competed out of the third flight, with Mackey and Mansfield playing out of the second.

Five teams from the Championship flight finished tied for fourth overall at 212. They were Pete Webster of Ringgold and Jerry Mathis of Dalton, Jimbo Wilkins and Ricky Brown of Gainesville, Mike Burr of Tyrone and Bob Sellers of Peachtree City, Ricky and Charles Wilson of Cartersville and Buddy Guth and Tom Ganshaw of Americus.

The Championship through the Third flights were eligible for the overall honors. The field of 96 teams was divided into eight flights based on team handicap index. The field alternated between the two host clubs, with the top four flights playing their first and third rounds at Stonebridge.

Other flight winners were Fourth - tie -Nick Kirkland of Snellville and Larry Askew of Lilburn and Jackie Glover of Albany and Tim Carter of Leesburg (215); Fifth - George LaPorte and Ronnie Tatum of Peachtree City (215); Sixth - Steve Craine of Norcross and Dan Bogan of Alpharetta (217) and Seventh - Gerald and John Keller of Kennesaw (229).

Entries were open to two-man teams of male amateur golfers who are members of a GSGA member club and residents of Georgia and whose combined handicap index is 4.0 or higher. The Four-Ball Tournament field was determined by lottery and precedes the annual Four-Ball Championship, in which the entrants with the lowest 80 team handicap indexes comprise the field.

GSGA conducts 16 statewide competitions for men and women of all age groups, three interstate matches and 17 USGA qualifying events each year. Other services include computerized handicapping, course rating and measuring, a summer-long junior sectional competitions program, Golf Georgia magazine and two college scholarship programs.
