East Section Runs Away with GSGA Junior Sectional Challenge Match
Local juniors shine in Sectional Challenge Match
AUGUSTA, Ga. - The East section, posting strong performances out of the Girls 12-13 and Girls 11 and under age brackets, tallied a tournament total of 82.08 points to secure a runaway victory over the defending Southwest section at the 36th annual GSGA Junior Sectional Challenge Match, which was played at West Lake Country Club, July 20-21. The Northwest section finished third overall with 34 points.
The East's success was led by Ashlan Ramsey of Augusta, who claims West Lake as her home course. Ramsey posted rounds of 33 and 40, as well as 11 team points, to take overall honors in the Girls' 12-13 age division. Megan Sabol of Martinez, playing in the Girls' 11 and under division, topped her group and tallied a total of 12 points for the East.
"It was great to be able to play this event on my home course," Ramsey explained. "It feels great to get a win for the [East] section too."
Appling's Alex Shead picked up eight points, four each day, and finished at the top of the Boys 11 and Under division after rounds of 36 and 38. Taylor Gove of Evans posted rounds of 71 and 70 to finish at the top of the Boys 14-15 group and also secured ten points towards the East's total. The Boys' 12-13 age division was also captured by the East section as Taylor Guilbeau of Evans fired rounds of 39 and 38. Guilbeau added seven points toward the section total.
Other division winners included: Valdosta's Trey McQuaig (Southwest), who posted two rounds of 72 in the Boys 16-17 and Macon's Taylor McGraw (Middle) carded 82 and 81 to best the Girls 14-17.
At the conclusion of play on Monday afternoon, the contestants returned to the course to compete in long drive and putting competitions within each age division. The long drive of the day came from Griffin's Davin White, playing out of the Boys 16-17 age division, with a drive of 286 yards. Jordan Byrd of Mount Vernon, representing the Southeast squad, had a 276-yard drive to take the title in the Boys 14-15 division. Jacob Joiner of Albany out drove the Boys 12-13 division with a 259-yard launch. The Boys 11 and under group was won with a 205-yard drive by Lee Bennett of Blackshear. The 14-17 girls division was won by Baxley's Ciera Bagley with a drive of 232 yards. Sarah Harrison of Columbia bested the Girls 12-13 group with a drive of 211 yards and Megan Sabol of Martinez drove the ball 191 yards to take the Girls 11 and Under group.
The putting competition took place on a three-hole putting course setup on the West Lake Country Club practice green. Lee Bennett, who earlier won the long drive competition, posted the low score of the day with just six putts. Daniel Crovo of Perry (Boys 16-17), Hannah Barger of Elberton (Girls 14-17), Anna Buchanan of Athens (Girls 12-13) and Megan Sabol (Girls 11 and Under) each won their age bracket with a score of 9. Savannah's Howard Hickey captured the Boys 14-15 division after shooting 8 and Robert Shaw of Cumming rolled the ball 8 times to take the Boys 12-13 group.
The Junior Sectional Challenge Match is a statewide competition that brings together the top performers from the summer-long GSGA Junior Sectional Program. Participants earned the opportunity to compete and represent their section in the tournament by accumulating points in their section's qualifying events. Each of the seven geographic sections sends their top four point earners from each boys age division and the top two from each girls division to the Challenge Match. The team winner, or winning section, is determined by cumulative points earned based on order of finish in each round within the various age divisions.
The Junior Sectional Program began in 1974 and was established by the Georgia State Golf Association as a grassroots effort to provide juniors across the state with the opportunity to experience competitive golf.
