Kyu Ri Ban Captures Top 60 Women's Classic By Four Strokes

ADAIRSVILLE, Ga. - Kyu Ri Ban of Duluth carded a final-round 74 to win by four shots at the Georgia Top 60 Women's Classic, which was held at Barnsley Gardens, June 28-29. Alma's Ashley Medders closed to within two strokes but bogeyed number 18 to match Ban's 74 and finish in second. Lauren Cousart of Athens, who began the day in a tie for fifth, shot a final-round-best 73 to put her at a 152 for the tournament and place her in third position.

Ban, who won the Georgia Women's Match Play Championship earlier this year, approached the seventh hole with a five stroke lead on second-place Medders and was playing at a two-under clip. Ban carded bogey on seven and double-bogey on the par-3 number eight. Medders also placed a bogey on her card at number seven but was the recipient of a three-stroke swing after recording birdie at eight. Ban would rebound with a birdie on nine to card a 36 for her front side and carry a four-shot advantage to the inward nine.

After the duo each scored par at 10, Medders would close to within two shots of Ban by dropping birdie putts on 11 and 12. Ban, never worrying, continued to par holes and force her fellow competitors to birdie. Medders , however, ran into trouble on the 178-yard 14th. From the highly elevated teeing ground, she flew the green and failed to connect on her putt and had to settle for double-bogey. Ban would par and carried this four-stroke lead to the clubhouse.

"I played consistent," Ban explained. "I tried not to panic when I made the double-bogey. I knew that I needed to make par and was able to finish strong. I am really excited to win this event."

Katie Davidson of Bonaire placed fourth overall at 157 (78-79). Kristen Bragg of Evans, a member of the women's golf team at Augusta State University, posted a final-round 80 to finish in a tie for fifth overall with Valdosta's Dori Carter, winner of the first flight. In a tie for seventh position at 159 was Augusta's Garrett Phillips, a teammate of Bragg's at Augusta State, and Anna Rogers of Hartwell. Greenboro's Ena Harvey, the reigning GSGA Senior Women's Player of the Year, finished in sole possession of ninth place with a 160 (81-79). At 161, Leigh Crosby of Athens and Rebecca Rocker of Eatonton, competing out of the first flight, placed in a tie for tenth place overall.

Other flight winners included Regan Freville of Augusta in flight two (165), Atlanta's Di Scott (167) from the third flight and Louise Beaudoin of Alpharetta out of flight four (186).

Originally known as the Women's Top 40 Competition, this event was established in 1989 to showcase the top female amateurs in Georgia. The field, which expanded to 56 in 2002, was expanded again to 60 in 2003 and the event was renamed. The field was determined by handicap index, with the 60 lowest entrants receiving positions in the field. The field was divided into five flights (Championship and first through fourth) by handicap index. All participants played from the same tees and were eligible for the overall title. Entries were open to female amateur golfers who are Georgia residents and a member of a GSGA Member Club.

GSGA conducts 18 statewide competitions for men and women of all age groups, three interstate matches and 17 USGA qualifying events each year. Other services include computerized handicapping, course rating and measuring, a summer-long junior sectional competitions program, Golf Georgia magazine and two college scholarship programs.
