Julie Bartholomew Captures Top 60 Women's Classic By a Stroke

EATONTON, Ga. - Julie Bartholomew of Marietta sank a six-foot, downhill putt for par on the final hole to win the Top 60 Women's Classic by one stroke over Laura Coble of Augusta at the Golf Club of Cuscowilla. Bartholomew fired an even 72 in the final round to finish at one-over 145 for the tournament, while Coble carded 74 for a 146 total.

Katie Davidson of Bonaire placed third overall and won the first flight at five-over 149 (75-74). First-round leader Carmen Bandea of Snellville struggled to a final-round 80 to finish fourth overall at 150. Her opening-round 70 was the only sub-par score of the tournament. The youngest player in the field at 13 years old, Bandea ended the day on a strong note, eagling the 454-yard 18th hole with a 60-foot chip shot from the fringe.

Bartholomew, who will be a freshman on the Vanderbilt golf team this fall, began the day in third place, three strokes back of Bandea and one behind Coble. Bartholomew played consistently throughout, opening with seven straight pars before recording a birdie on the par-3, 141-yard eighth hole. After teeing into the rough and narrowly missing a greenside bunker, she chipped in from 15 feet to move to even-par for the tournament and increase her lead to four strokes over Bandea and Coble, who both struggled on their opening nine.

Coble, however, did not go away. After going four-over on her first seven holes, the past champion, who entered this event with three straight victories in statewide championships, birdied holes 9, 10 and 12 to move within one stroke of Bartholomew. Although she bogeyed No. 13, Bartholomew posted her lone bogey of the day on the par-5 14th to keep the margin at one. Coble bogeyed 16, then made a 20-foot putt for birdie on 17 as Bartholomew continued to post pars. Coble's birdie attempt on 18 went wide and traveled a few feet beyond the hole, while Bartholomew held on for par and her first victory in a GSGA event.

Bartholomew credited her win to consistent play - over the 36 holes, she recorded 30 pars, three birdies, two bogeys and one double-bogey. In the final round, she had 16 pars, one birdie and one bogey. The lone double came on the par-3 16th in the first round, a hole she parred on the final day.

Also in the overall top 10 were Sarah Donald of Athens, who finished fifth at 153 (75-78), while first-flight competitor Anna Rogers placed sixth at 154, carding a pair of 77s. Lauren Cousart of Athens recorded her second straight top 10 finish in the event, tying for seventh with Pam Adamczyk of Mableton at 157. Mary Riley of Perry placed ninth at 161 (84-77), while Kristen Bragg of Evans and Ginette Spinucci of Stone Mountain tied for 10th with a score of 163. Spinucci won the second flight for the second straight year and placed among the top 10 overall for the third consecutive time.

Other flight winners included Rebecca Rocker of Eatonton in flight three (168) and Eleanor Kirkland of Stockbridge in flight four (167).

Originally known as the Women's Top 40 Competition, this event was established in 1989 to showcase the top female amateurs in Georgia. The field, which expanded to 56 in 2002, was expanded again to 60 in 2003 and the event was renamed. The field was determined by handicap index, with the 60 lowest entrants receiving positions in the field. The field was divided into five flights (Championship and first through fourth) by handicap index. All participants played from the same tees and were eligible for the overall title. Entries were open to female amateur golfers who are Georgia residents and a member of a GSGA Member Club.

GSGA conducts 18 statewide competitions for men and women of all age groups, three interstate matches and 17 USGA qualifying events each year. Other services include computerized handicapping, course rating and measuring, a summer-long junior sectional competitions program, Golf Georgia magazine and two college scholarship programs.
