Jean Reynolds Runs Away with Women's Top 60 Classic

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. - Jean Reynolds of Newnan outplayed her opponents with a final round, even-par 70 to capture the Women's Top 60 Classic by six strokes, finishing at two-over 142. Finishing second at 148 after a strong round of 71 was Sarah Kate Cousart of Athens. Leslie Stubblefield of Kennesaw, who started just two back, finished third at 150. First-flight competitor Lauren Cousart, Sarah Kate's 16-year-old sister, finished fourth overall at 152 with a final-round 74.

Laura Coble of Augusta finished fifth at 153, after falling back with a final-round 79. Katie Davidson of Bonaire was sixth at 156. Defending champion Charlotte Grant of Greensboro finished tied for seventh overall with three others at 157. They were Gretchen McLeod of Richmond Hill, who played in the first flight, and second-flight competitors Ginette Spinucci of Stone Mountain and Erin Campbell of Canton.

Reynolds, who will join the University of Georgia team in the fall, birdied two of her first four holes (number two and four) and had an eight-stroke lead by the turn, as her playing partners fell back on the front nine. Cousart, playing in the group ahead after an opening 77, made up ground on her back nine with birdies at 10, 15 and 18.

Reynolds, who won the Georgia Girls' Championship the past three summers, picked up her first GSGA women's title with solid play, hitting all but one fairway and 14 greens in her final round. Reynolds "took advantage early" as both her playing partners struggled over the first few holes. After number five, Reynolds was seven up on Stubblefield, who opened with a bogey and doubled number four, and eleven up on Coble, who had an uncharacteristic double- double- bogey- double stretch from two through five. Coble birdied seven and eight, but never challenged.

Asked about how holding such a large lead affected her, she stated "I just stuck to what I was doing." She also credited her caddie from Sea Island Golf Club, Jeremy Theus, with keeping her relaxed and making it fun, as well as providing local knowledge on the challenging 5,731-yard Seaside layout.

Sue Tucker of Atlanta won the third flight with a 163. Mary Bowmaster of Marietta capturedfourthflight honors with a 169.

Originally known as the Women's Top 40 Competition, this event was established in 1989 to showcase the top female amateurs in Georgia. The field, which was expanded to 56 in 2002, was expanded again to 60 and the event was renamed. The field was determined by handicap index, with the 60 lowest entrants receiving positions in the field. The field was divided into five flights (Championship and first through fourth) by handicap index. All participants played from the same tees and were eligible for the overall title. Entries were open to female amateur golfers who are Georgia residents and a member of a GSGA Member Club.

GSGA conducts 17 statewide competitions for men and women of all age groups, three interstate matches and 17 USGA qualifying events each year. Other services include computerized handicapping, course rating and measuring, a summer-long junior sectional competitions program, Golf Georgia magazine and two college scholarship programs.
