Shannon Silvernail Captures GSGA Women's Top 40 Competition

DUNWOODY, GA -Shannon Silvernail of Macon held onto her lead and captured the GSGA Women's Top 40 Competition, finishing the two-day tournament with a two-over par 72-74-146. Alison Hiller of Atlanta finished three strokes back with a 74-75-149. Last year's winner, Leigh Turner of Alpharetta, shot 74 today to finish third at six over par for the tournament, which was held at Dunwoody Country Club June 28 -29.

Silvernail started the day with a one-stroke lead and began to pull away from the field, making the turn at 2-under. After bogeys on 10, 11 and 13, Silvernail had slipped into a tie with Hiller, a rising senior at Southern Illinois University. Hiller later faltered as Silvernail steadied herself through the final holes.

Silvernail was the Runner-Up in last fall's Georgia Women's Golf Association Amateur Championship, where she was edged out in three-hole playoff, and recently set the course record at Barrington Hall Golf Club in Macon by shooting a 64.

The Women's Top 40 Competition was established by the Georgia State Golf Association in 1989 to showcase the top female amateurs in Georgia. The field was determined by handicap index, with the entrants with the 40 lowest handicaps receiving positions in the field. Entries were open to female amateur golfers who are Georgia residents and a member of a GSGA Member Club.

This year's field is one of the strongest in the event's history, with the handicap cut-off falling at 9.9. The format is 36 holes of stroke play over two days. The field is divided into five flights, although all participants play from the same tees and compete for the overall title.
