Turner Holds on to Win at Georgia Women's Top 40 Competition

DUNWOODY, GA - Although her stellar play of yesterday had disappeared, Leigh Turner of Alpharetta was able to maintain her lead to win the 12th Annual Georgia Women's Top 40 Competition held at Dunwoody Country Club in Dunwoody June 29-30.

Turner shot a second round 79 for a six-over par 150 to win by two over Ellen Dempsey of St. Simons who shot 80 for an eight-over par 152. Turner wasn't able to repeat her five birdie performance yesterday as she was unable to post a single birdie today. Scores for the entire field were mostly higher despite the fact that weather conditions were much better than yesterday's round which was subjected to an hour and a half rain delay.

This was Dempsey's second runner-up finish this year. She lost to Nancy Smith of Savannah at the Women's Match Play Championship held at Sunset Hills Country Club in Carrollton. The event brought together the top forty female golfers in the state in a two-day 36-hole stroke play competition. The field was divided into five eight-person flights. Ashley Couch of Lilburn and Kathi Eutzler of Atlanta tied for first place in the First Flight while the Second Flight winner was Claudeen Lindberg of Atlanta. Belinda Marsh of Alpharetta was the Third Flight winner and the Fourth Flight winner was Rebecca Rocker of Eatonton.
