Georgia-South Carolina Junior Challenge Match Ends in a Tie
First tie in 35 years of Challenge Match History
ATLANTA -- For the second-straight day, it came down to the final hole in the final match on the course at the Georgia-South Carolina Junior Challenge Match, taking place at Atlanta Country Club, July 16-17. Grant Waggoner of North Charleston halved the 18th hole with Davin White of Locust Grove to maintain his 1-up lead and give South Carolina a team point. For the first time in the 35-year history of the match, however, his point resulted in an 8-8 final tally and a tie between the two teams.
Georgia trailed by just one point, 4 ½ to 3 ½, after the first day, but rallied with four wins and one halved match in Saturday's final round to pull even with South Carolina. The Palmetto State didn't make it easy, however. In the first match of the day, Cody Proveaux of Leesville defeated Austin Vick of Evans, 2 and 1, while Austin Langdale of Townville posted an 8-and-6 win over Jack Gibbs of Evans.
The Peach State picked up a win from its reigning, two-time Junior Champion Scott Wolfes of St. Simons Island, who defeated Hayden Garrett of Easley, 3 and 1. Also tallying points for Georgia were Matthew Beringer of Macon, who won 2 and 1 over Will Murphy of Columbia; Joe Lewis of Savannah, who won 1-up over Wick Andrews of Columbia; and Jimmy Beck of Columbus, who won 2 and 1 over Ford Blanchard of Orangeburg. Caleb Morris of Metter finished All Square in his match with C.J. Liner of North Augusta to earn a half-point.
Lewis was the lone player on the Georgia squad to win both of his matches and earn the full two team points. Morris contributed 1 ½ points to the effort.
Since the event adopted a match-play format in 1995, the closest match was an 8 ½ to 7 ½ South Carolina victory that year. The last two years have produced lopsided 11 ½ to 4 ½ wins, one for each team (Georgia in 2008, South Carolina in 2009).
This was the 35th playing of the Georgia-South Carolina Junior Challenge Match, which brings together the top junior golfers in the two neighboring states. Teams are composed of the top eight finishers from each state's Junior Championship. Georgia now owns a 21-13-1 lead in the all-time series.
