Georgia Defeats South Carolina in Annual Junior Challenge Match

AIKEN, SC - Georgia defeated South Carolina 9 ½ - 6 ½ in the annual Georgia-South Carolina Junior Challenge Match, which was held July 20 - 21 at Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, South Carolina. Georgia began the final round with a 4 ½ -3 ½ lead and won four more matches Saturday to secure their second win in two years.

Winning matches today were Parker Beck of Duluth (1 up), Joe Morton of Waycross (5 & 3), Brian Harman of Savannah (3 & 2) and David Hoyt of Rome (4 & 3). Matt Hughes and Reid Waller, both of Dalton, ended their matches all square.

Eight matches worth one point each were played each of the two days. Both teams were awarded a half point for matches that were all square after 18 holes.

This year's competition marked the 26th playing of the Georgia-South Carolina Challenge Match, which brings together the top junior golfers in the two neighboring states. Teams are composed of the top eight finishers from each state's Junior Championship. Any necessary player substitutions followed the order of finish as well.  Georgia now holds a 17-9 edge over South Carolina. Georgia won last year at The Farm in Rocky Face, Georgia 10-6.

 

Many notable players have represented Georgia in this competition over the years, including PGA Tour Professionals Davis Love III, Gene Sauers, Bob Tway and Larry Mize; three of the 10 recently named 2001 Walker Cup Team members, Nick Cassini, Lucas Glover and D.J. Trahan; several Georgia Amateur Champions, Bill Bergin (1981), Carter Mize (1993-94), and Jack Croyle (2000); and college standouts Wes Latimer (Georgia Tech) and John Engler (Clemson).
