Georgia Wins Big at Girls' Junior Challenge Match, 17-7
BLUFFTON, S.C. – For the second day in a row, Georgia outscored South Carolina 8 ½ - 3 ½ and won the title by an overall score of 17-7 in the second annual Georgia-South Carolina Girls' Junior Challenge Match, which took place at Berkeley Hall, August 4-5.
Yugene Lee of Athens finished the match with a perfect 6-0 record, as she shut out her opponent for the second-straight day. Lee topped Taylor Weaver of Spartanburg by a 3 and 2 match score, and also won both nines to gain three points for Georgia.
Americus' Kathryn Fowler also posted a 3-0 shutout over Alex Rankin of Anderson, winning her match 5 and 4. Fowler finished the Challenge Match with five of a possible six points.
The Lee and Fowler matches sealed the victory for Georgia, which needed just four points coming into the final round to clinch the overall match.
Georgia's reigning Girls' Champion, Mariah Stackhouse of Riverdale, iced the victory with a 4 and 3 win over South Carolina's Girls' Champion, Meredith Few of Aiken. Stackhouse collected 2 ½ more points for Team Georgia while Few added a half-point to South Carolina's total by going All Square with Stackhouse on the final nine holes.
For the second-straight day, Georgia's Lindsay Adams found herself in the closest match. Adams, from Lawrenceville, fell to Cayci Ruppe of Gaffney by a 2-up margin, while Ruppe tallied three points for South Carolina.
The two teams competed using the Nassau format, which awards one point to the winner of each nine and one point to the overall match winner. Half-points are awarded for matches that are All Square after each nine and overall.
Georgia's win avenged a 5-3 loss to South Carolina in last year's inaugural Girls' Junior Challenge Match.
Teams were composed of the top four finishers from each state's 2007 Girls' Championship, provided they are at least 13 years old. Any necessary player substitutions follow the order of finish as well. Golfers were eligible for the Georgia Girls' Championship if they were between the ages of 9 and 17 at the time of the Championship (June 18-20), Georgia residents and GSGA members or dependents of GSGA members.
