South Carolina Rallies to Win Girls' Junior Challenge Match

SAVANNAH, Ga. - South Carolina tallied three singles victories in the final round to come from behind and win the inaugural Georgia-South Carolina Girls' Junior Challenge Match, 5-3, at The Landings Club (Plantation Course).

Georgia led by one point (2 1/2 to 1 1/2) going into the final round, but gained just a half a point on Sunday, as Metter's Tess Fordham finished all square with Taylor Barrett of York.

South Carolina then posted three straight wins, all in less then 18 holes, to move ahead for the team victory. Rachel Uremovich of Hilton Head topped Marietta's Blaire Minter, 3 and 1. Anderson's Elizabeth Freeman defeated Carrie Metz of Carnesville, 3 and 2. South Carolina's reigning Girls' Champion, Taylor Weaver of Spartanburg, matched that with a 3 and 2 win over Hoschton's Emilie Burger.

This was the inaugural playing of the Georgia-South Carolina Girls' Junior Challenge Match, which brings together the top junior girls golfers (based on each state's Girls' Championship) in the two neighboring states. It is patterned after the Georgia-South Carolina Junior Challenge Match for boys, which has been an annual event between the two states since 1976.
