Pictor Wins Fifth-Straight Senior Women's Championship

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Brenda Pictor of Marietta wins the GSGA Senior Women's Championship at 2-over-par 146 (76-70), nine strokes over runner-up Mary Riley of Perry. Riley finished at 11-over-par 155. The 16th annual GSGA Senior Women's Championship was played at King and Prince Golf Course, August 26-27.
Pictor's 2-under-par 70 in the final round was the only score recorded in red numbers over the 36-hole competition. This year's Senior Women's runner-up, Riley, posted rounds of 75-80 en route to her 155 two-day total.
This victory marks the fifth-straight time Pictor has won this annual competition, and sixth in the last seven years. Pictor's first Senior Women's victory came in 2007 at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain. Two years later began her current streak of five. The 2008 and 2009 Championships were held at Arrowhead Pointe at Richard B. Russell State Park in Elberton. Houston Lake Country Club in Perry hosted in 2010, and Brookstone Golf and Country Club in Acworth hosted in 2011. Last year, Pictor won at Alpharetta Athletic Club-East in Milton.
She has been the GSGA Senior Women's Player of the Year in each of the last six seasons, sharing the title in 2007 with Darlene Werhnyak and winning the next five outright. She is also a two-time GSGA Tommy Barnes Award winner, signifying the Association's overall Player of the Year.
Charlotte Grant (77-83) and Donna Eaton (77-83), both of Greensboro, tied for third overall at 16-over-par 160. Susan Rheney of Greensboro (82-81), Darlene Werhnyak of Lawrenceville (82-81) and Liz Butler of Greensboro (80-83) tied for fifth overall at 19-over-par 163. Claudeen Lindberg of Atlanta finished eighth at 22-over-par 166 (81-85). Four players tied for ninth, Cheryl Grigg of Sea Island (84-83), Deb Agran of Greensboro (82-85), Ena Harvey of Greensboro (81-86) and Jodie Shepard of Newnan (80-87), to round out the top 10 overall at 23-over-par 167.
Pictor claimed the Championship A flight and Eaton won the Championship B flight. Betsy Butler of Atlanta topped the first flight at 9-over-par 153 (77-76), Alice Richardson of Alpharetta won the second flight at 25-over-par 169 (79-90) and Fulford won flight three. There was a three-way tie for fourth flight honors at 35-over-par 179: Criss Stillwagon of St. Simons Island (95-84), Fran Coody of Perry (91-88) and Joyce Doss of Carrollton (91-88). Patty Hudspeth of Midland claimed the fifth flight at 35-over-par 179 (93-86) and Jeanne Follett of Kathleen's 40-over-par 184 (95-89) earned her the top spot in flight six.
The King and Prince Golf Course played to 5,598 yards and a par 72 for the Championship A and B flights, which were eligible for the overall title. Flights one through six played to 5,168 yards and a par 72.
The GSGA Senior Women's Championship is conducted by the Georgia State Golf Association. Entries were open to female amateur golfers at least 50 years old as of August 27, 2013, who belong to a GSGA Member Club.
