Davis, Spinucci Claim Fourth Georgia Women's Team Title

Perennial contenders win by four strokes

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Danielle Davis of St. Simons Island and Ginette Spinucci of Stone Mountain combined for an 18-under-par 126 to capture their fourth Georgia Women's Team Championship title at Brasstown Valley Resort. Davis and Spinucci finished four strokes ahead of the team of Mary Riley of Perry and Gwen Young of Cochran, who came in at 14-under-par 130. The 28th annual competition took place Wednesday and Thursday, September 25-26.

After the opening round of four-ball net, which was delayed two hours and 15 minutes due to heavy rain, Davis and Spinucci were five strokes off the lead at 7-under-par 65. In Thursday's final round of scramble format, the dynamic duo posted birdies on holes two, four, five, six, eight, nine, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15 with a bogey on 17. The five-stroke deficit quickly turned into a four-stroke victory as Davis and Spinucci are now four-time winners of the Georgia Women's Team Championship.

With a fourth title now in their name, Davis and Spinucci are tied with Sissi Gann of Kathleen and Lee Kaney (Burton) of Fort Valley with the most titles as a team. Individually, Spinucci now has seven titles, which is an event record. Four of those are now with Davis (2009-11, 2013), two are with Marilyn Nolan-Johnson of Marietta (2005, 2006) and one with Brenda Pictor of Marietta (2008). Davis has five – four of which are with Spinucci and one with Maria Johnson of Jesup (2004).

Finishing third overall were Jane Kelly and Donna McMikle, both of Albany, at 12-under-par 132 (63-69). Fourth-place overall were the round-one leaders, Fran Coody and Lori Soles, both of Perry, at 10-under-par 134 (60-74). Two teams tied for fifth overall at 7-under-par 137, including last year's winners Betsy Butler of Atlanta and Phyllis Foisy of Statham (69-68) and Elaine Carsel and Nancy Hendrix (66-71), both of Athens. Brenda Escoe of Watkinsville and Vonda Landrum of Bogart finished seventh at 6-under-par 138 (67-71). A pair of teams tied for eighth at 4-under-par 140, including Leanne Casey of Lavonia and Kaye Lewis of Fair Play (71-69) and Ann Schuette of Clayton and Dana Seay of Lawrenceville (67-73). Rounding out the top 10 overall were four teams at 3-under-par 141: Jan Cross of Evans and Alice Richardson of Alpharetta (69-72), Carmen Andia of Atlanta and Jinna Wheeler of Canton (68-73), Patty Hudspeth of Midland and Karen Stewart of Columbus (68-73) and Suzie Tindall and Susan Tucker (67-74), both of Atlanta.

Broken down by flights, Davis and Spinucci topped the Championship flight and Kelly and McMikle claimed the first flight. The team of Schuette and Seay led all in flight two, while Pam Mitchell and Farah Reynolds, both of Atlanta, won flight three at 2-under-par 142 (69-73). In flight four, Laura Morris and Kay Smith, both of Big Canoe, finished at 9-over-par 153 (69-84) to win the flight.
