Chris Hall, Jack Hall Win Senior Four-Ball Championship
COLUMBUS, Ga. – Chris Hall of Kennesaw and Jack Hall of Sea Island teamed up to win the Georgia Senior Four-Ball Championship in fine fashion with a total score of 12-under-par 201. Finishing in the runner-up on the final leaderboard was Rocky Costa of Alpharetta and Lee Dennis of Comer at 7-under-par 206. This year the event took place at the Country Club of Columbus and Green Island Country Club, November 13-15.
Round one and round two looked similar for the winning twosome and the runner-ups. On Wednesday in the opening round, each team matched each other's 66 to share the lead. In round two, both teams once again turned in the same score of 69 to keep a share of the lead. Friday's final 18 holes was the difference as 'Team Hall' recorded six birdies and one bogey for a 66, while Costa and Dennis could only manage an even-par round of 71.
John Gibbs III and Ralph Ireland III, both of Augusta, finished third at 6-under-par 207 (72-69-71). Fourth-place went to James Harless of Aurora and Tom Hoffecker of Lilburn at 5-under-par 208 (72-69-67). Phil Hardin and Gay McMichael, both of Macon, came in fifth at 4-under-par 209 (74-67-68). Two teams tied for sixth at 2-under-par 211: Mark Benefield of Peachtree Corners and Brian Johnston of Duluth (70-72-69) and Gordon Blakeley of Newnan and Gene Henderson of Peachtree City (70-69-72). Rounding out the top 10 were three teams tied for eighth at 1-under-par 212, including Tom Rief of Albany and Dan Rhoads of Flowery Branch (75-69-68); Mel Mendenhall of Marietta and Larry Vaughan of Greensboro (73-70-69); and Jack Kearney and John Landis, both of Peachtree City (70-72-70).
The defending champions, Larry Clark of Kingston and Don Marsh of Johns Creek, tied for 15th at 6-over-par 219 (73-74-72).
In the Super Senior flight for those 65 and older competitors, Danny Daniels of Kingsland and Frank Perry of Fayetteville earned flight honors at 11-under-par 202 (71-68-63). The Super Senior flight competed at the Country Club of Columbus at 6,007 yards and a par of 71.
Flights one through four competed this week at Green Island Country Club, 20 minutes down the road from the Country Club of Columbus, at 5,988 yards and a par of 71. In flight one, Buzz Alexander and Dick Donegan, both of Kennesaw, won at 6-under-par 207 (73-68-66). Flight two was won by Bill Carroll, Jr., of Rome and Dwight Duke of Duluth at 4-under-par 209 (74-65-70). Bob Kelly of Perry and Joe Pearson of Fort Valley won flight three at 7-over-par 220 (79-70-71). The duo of Geoffrey Richardson of Roswell and Brad Ward of Marietta topped flight four at 24-over-par 237 (79-79-79).
Entries were open to two-man teams of male amateur golfers age 55 or older as of November 13, and who had a maximum handicap differential of six strokes. The field of 92 teams was divided into flights by handicap index. The Championship flight and Super Senior flight competed at the Country Club of Columbus, while the first through fourth flights played at Green Island Country Club in Columbus.
The completion of this week's Georgia Senior Four-Ball Championship marks the end of the 2013 GSGA tournament season.
