Touring professional Ryan Nelson of Charleston, S.C., and Michael Kim of Del Mar, Calif., a sophomore at Cal who just won the Jack Nicklaus Award as the National Player of the Year, tied for co-medalist honors at 11-under-par 133 and earned berths in the U.S. Open Championship.

Nelson, who was co-medalist in U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying at this same site two years ago, carded 68-65, while Kim posted 67-66. Nelson shot 132 at Hawks Ridge Golf Club in 2011.

Grayson Murray of Raleigh, N.C., a rising sophomore at UNC Greensboro, earned the third and final qualifying spot with a 9-under 135 (69-66).

T.J. Vogel of Cooper City, Fla., the 2012 U.S. Amateur Public Links Champion, finished as first alternate at 8-under 136.  Vogel declared himself a professional prior to the start of today’s qualifier.

There was a two-man playoff for second alternate between Jordan Mitchell of Atlanta, Ga., and Mercer University golfer Hans Reimers of Albany, Ore.  Both players, along with two others that did not show for the playoff, tied at 7-under 137.  Mitchell won the playoff with a par on the second playoff hole (No. 2).

Hawks Ridge Golf Club played to 7,186 yards and a par 71.

The 113th U.S. Open Championship will be held at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa., June 10-16.  A record 9,860 entries were accepted.  Entries were open to any professional and to amateurs with USGA Handicap Indexes not exceeding 1.4.  The U.S. Open is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association.
