Sam Audia III of Birmingham, Ala., and Danny Smyth of Alpharetta, Ga., share medalist honors after each posting 3-under-par 69 scores to qualify for the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship at an 18-hole qualifier at The Frog Golf Club at the Georgian in Villa Rica, Ga. Joining the two medalists are five other players at 2-under-par 70 who earned one of the seven automatic spots in the Championship: Georgian Bob Royak of Alpharetta, Torrie Coghlin of Irondale, Ala., Matthew Swan of Montgomery, Ala., Eric Russell of Hendersonville, N.C., and Robert Godfrey of Anderson, S.C.
At the conclusion of 18 holes, two Georgians, Scott Davenport of Marietta and Carlton Forrester of Atlanta, were tied at 1-under-par 71. To determine the first and second alternate positions, the two players returned to the 10th hole. With a birdie on 446-yard par 4, Davenport finished as first alternate and Forrester finished as second alternate with a par.
The Frog Golf Club at the Georgian was set to 7,018 yards and a par of 72. A field of 131 players competed in the qualifying round.
Qualifiers advanced to the 33rd annual U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship, which will be held at the Country Club of Birmingham in Birmingham, Ala., October 5-10, 2013, with a starting field of 264 players. Entries were open to amateur golfers who will have reached their 25th birthday on or before October 5, 2013, and who have a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 3.4. The U.S. Mid-Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association.
