Georgia Runs Away With Fourth Straight Southeastern Challenge Match

Ball Ground, Ga. – The Georgia Team won eighteen of their singles matches en route to their fourth-consecutive victory at the Southeastern Challenge Match, which was played at Hawks Ridge Golf Club, October 14-15. Georgia finished with 32 1/2 points to Florida's 15 1/2 and Alabama's 15.

Georgia began the day with a five-and-half point advantage over Alabama and an eight-point lead over Florida. Georgia won five of its six opening four-ball matches and seven of its twelve foursome matches on Saturday. The Georgia squad then opened the second day of action by tallying the first five points. Don Marsh of Alpharetta opened with two quick wins over Alabama's Rene Williams and Florida's Rick Woulfe. Kennesaw's Larry Clark followed suit by winning 6 and 4 against Edward Patridge of Alabama and 5 and 4 over Florida's Bruce Scamehorn. Dublin's Bill Brown also quickly dispatched his Alabama counterpart, Richard Jeffers, 3 and 2.

Team Georgia would then go on to sweep an additional five matches. Each collecting two points for Georgia were Woodstock's Mark Strickland, who defeated Alabama's Will Swift and Florida's Jon Veneziano (each 2 up); Savannah's Doug Hanzel, who beat Bret Voisin of the Florida squad (6 and 5) and Woodie Eubanks of Alabama (1 up); Cumming's Greg Kennedy dispatched Tom Jungkind and Robert Parker (each 6 and 5); the reigning GSGA Men's Player of the Year David Noll Jr. of Dalton, who dropped Vic Kyatt of Alabama (3 and 1 ) and Florida's Ed Kenny (3 and 1); and Baxley's Adam Thomas, who collected two points for Georgia with wins over Steve Hudson of Alabama (3 and 2) and Florida's Steve Carter (2 up). Other Georgia players who tallied points for the Peach State included Kennesaw's Bill Leonard who collected a point and a half by defeating Alabama's Bill Moor, 6 and 4, and halving his match with Florida's Steve Earsley. Vidalia's Wally Adams Jr. and Dave Womack of McDonough each collected a point for Team Georgia and Marietta's Jeff Belk lost his match with his Alabama competitor but halved with Florida's Paul Melson for a half point.

This marks Georgia's fourth consecutive victory at the Southeastern Challenge Match and ties them with Florida for the all-time series lead with five wins. Florida captured four straight wins in 1994-1996 and 1998. Alabama's lone victory came in 1991. Georgia's 32 1/2 points is the most scored by a team since the event's current format took place and the matches were made a biennial match in 1998.

Each state features a 12-man team consisting of eight mid-amateurs and four seniors. Players were selected by their respective state associations based on recent performance.
