Coble Comes from Behind to Win Second Straight Title at Greater Atlanta Women's Amateur Championship

VILLA RICA, Ga. - Laura Coble of Augusta erased a six-stroke deficit to capture her second consecutive win at the 36th Annual Greater Atlanta Women's Amateur Championship which was held at Canongate-on-Mirror Lake, May 25-27. Coble fired a final-round 71 to win by a stroke over Garrett Phillips of Augusta, the leader after 36 holes of play. Evans' Kristen Bragg, who shot a final-round low score of 70, finished in a tie for third with Duluth's Kyu Ri Ban at 228.

Coble, who won last year's Greater Atlanta in a playoff, has now won her tenth GSGA individual title. She has won the Georgia Women's Match Play Championship six times, the Greater Atlanta Women's Amateur Match Play three times, and won the 1998 Top 60 Women's Classic (then the Women's Top 40).

Coble, who trailed by four strokes after the front nine, capitalized with a par on number 10 when Phillips recorded a triple-bogey. After Phillips' bogey at 11, Coble's par evened the duo up. Coble picked up strokes at holes 13 and 14. Coble's only bogey on the back nine came on the 314-yard 15th hole but she would shut the door on Phillips with pars on the last three holes.

"My tee shots weren't the spectacular today but I played well around the greens," Coble explained. "I just didn't make a lot of big mistakes.

Steady play is what let Coble scratch away at Phillips lead and eventually take the title. She recorded three birdies, thirteen pars and just two bogeys (one per side).

Marietta's Julie Bartholomew, winner at the 2004 Georgia Top 60 Women's Classic, finished in fifth after shooting 72 in the final round. Claudeen Lindberg of Atlanta, winner of the first flight, finished sixth overall with a tournament total of 233. Four players tied for seventh position with a 236. They are Jennifer Adyorough of Atlanta (78-80-78), the 2004 Georgia Girls' Champion, Vicki Yi of Bogart (82-78-76), Danielle Davis f St. Simons Island (77-80-79) and Donna Gonsalves of Eatonton (79-79-78).

Other flight winners include: 2nd flight - Deana Atkins of Dacula and Jean Dawson of Suwanee (254); 3rd flight - Jan Cross of Augusta and Marilyn Nolan-Johnson of Marietta (250); 4th flight - Dee Ann Dillard of Newnan and Patti Karst of Smyrna (261); 5th flight - Susan Clonts of Villa Rica (259).

The field of 70 players is divided into six flights based on handicap index. The championship through second flights are playing from the same tees (5,874 yards, par 72) and are eligible for the overall championship. The third through fifth flights are playing from 5,372 yards and a par of 71. Entries were open to female amateur golfers who are members of a GSGA Member Club and Georgia residents. This is the second year in a row that this event has taken place at Canongate-on-Mirror Lake.

The GSGA conducts 18 statewide competitions for men and women of all age groups, three interstate matches and 17 USGA qualifying events each year. Other services include computerized handicapping, course rating and measuring, a summer-long junior sectional competitions program, Golf Georgia magazine and two college scholarship programs.
