Georgia Defeats Florida at Annual Women's Team Matches


AUGUSTA, Ga. - Georgia maintained their opening-round, ten-point lead to defeat Florida 32-22 at the 23rd Annual Georgia-Florida Women's Team Matchesheld at Augusta Country Club. Georgia picked up half of the 36 points available in the 12 final-round, singles matches.


Diana Ramage of Fayetteville and Laura Coble of Augusta got the Georgia team of to a good start, with Ramage winning the opening match 3-0 and Coble, an Augusta Country Club member, winning 2 ½ - ½ using a Nassau scoring format.Florida won the next four matches before Ginette Spinucci of Stone Mountain, one of two seniors on the team, posted a 2 ½ - ½ win. Alison Hiller of Atlanta and Charlotte Grant of Greensboro secured the Georgia victory in the next two matches, each winning 3-0.


Also contributing points for Georgia were Ellen Dempsey of St. Simons Island (1 ½), Kingsley Barrett of Gainesville (1), Whitney Frykman of Acworth (½) and Darlene Werhnyak of Lawrenceville (½). Michelle Doyle of LaGrange and Virginia Tyson of Macon, who both won their four-ball matches 2 ½ - ½, fell 3-0 to their singles opponents.


The Nassau scoring format awards one point to the winner of each nine and one point for the overall match, with a half-point for any ties. Georgia led 14-4 after the opening four-ball matches.


Georgia posted its fourth victory in five years, reclaiming the title they lost last year at Grand Harbor Club's River Course in Vero Beach, Fla., 30-24. This was the 23rd playing of the Georgia-Florida Women's Team Matches, which brings together the top women amateur golfers in the two neighboring states. The team members are selected by their state associations based on their performance in recent events. Florida leads in the series 12-11.


GSGA conducts 17 statewide competitions for men and women of all age groups, three interstate matches and 17 USGA qualifying events each year. Other services include computerized handicapping, course rating and measuring, a summer-long junior sectional competitions program, Golf Georgia magazine and two college scholarship programs.
